Naruto wakes up in the morning and goes to the Ninja Academy. One of the other people, who passed the graduation exam, asks Naruto why he is there. Naruto says he also passed. Suddenly, a girl then asks the boy to move out of the way. The girl is Sakura Hanuro and Naruto fancies her. Naruto wonders if Sakura wants to sit next to him, however she just shouts at Naruto to get out of the way, since she wants to sit next to the boy, who's on the other side of Naruto. The boy is Sasuke, who is the most popular person in the class.
Sakura sits next to Sasuke and thinks that she wants to kiss him. Naruto wonders what's so great about Sasuke and stands on the table, kneeling down, glaring at Sasuke. A boy, in the row in front, knocks Naruto forward, by accident, and Naruto and Sasuke accidently kiss each other. Naruto and Sasuke start choking and Sakura gets mad and beats Naruto up. Iruka then arrives and explains that the graduates will split into teams of three, each with a Jonin, an elite ninja. In these teams they will complete missions for the village. Iruka calls out the teams and, Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura are put together. Naruto asks Iruka why he has to be in the same team as Sasuke. Iruka says that out of the class Sasuke had the best grades and Naruto had the worst, and the teams have to be balanced. Iruka then says that in the afternoon the teams will be introduced to their Jonin and they can have a break until then.
While Sasuke is eating, beside a window, Naruto sneaks up on him and ties him up. However, Naruto's plan seems to have failed, since Sasuke just climbs out the window. Meanwhile, Sakura is sitting on a bench, thinking about Sasuke, as usual, when she sees him staring at her. Sasuke then walks over to her and sits beside her. Sasuke asks Sakura what she thinks of Naruto. Sakura says she finds him annoying and all she wants is Sasuke to acknowledge her. Sakura then goes to kiss Sasuke. Meanwhile, back where Naruto tried to tie Sasuke up, Sasuke is actually tied up and says that Naruto used the Transformation Jutsu to look like him.
As Sakura goes to kiss Naruto, who's still disguised as Sasuke, he gets the runs and runs to the toilet. Back where Sakura is, the real Sasuke turns up and asks where Naruto is. Sakura then starts talking about how Naruto doesn't have any parents and gets to do what he wants. This angers Sasuke and he says that Sakura is annoying, and walks off. As Naruto runs out of the toilet, he bumps into Sasuke. Sakura thinks about what Sasuke said to her and thinks that she could try and be nicer to Naruto. In Naruto's house, the Hokage and a Jonin are talking. The Hokage says that putting Sasuke and Naruto in his team is a good idea, and the Jonin thinks that this could be trouble.
4 - Hatake Kakashi!!
The chapter begins with Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura waiting in a room for their Jonin leader. Naruto says that all the other teams have already left. Naruto then decides to put a blackboard eraser between the door and the wall, so it will fall down on the Jonin's head when he opens the door. Sasuke thinks that no elite ninja could fall for such a trap. The Jonin opens the door and the eraser hits him across the head. The Jonin then smiles and says that he already hates the three of them.
They then go and sit on the roof of a building and the Jonin asks them to introduce themselves. Naruto asks the Jonin to introduce himself first. The Jonin explains that his name is Kakashi Hatake and he doesn't tell them anything else. Naruto says his name and just talks about Ramen, and how he wants to surpass the Hokage. Kakashi finds Naruto very boring and Sasuke begins. He says his name and explains how he wants to restore his clan and kill a certain person. Sakura then begins and just explains how much she loves Sasuke and how much she hates Naruto. Kakashi then states that their Shinobi duties will begin tomorrow and that the first thing they'll be doing, is training. Kakashi explains that out of the 27 graduates, only 9 can be Genin. The rest are sent back to the Academy. Kakashi says that they'll be fighting him in this test and they can use any weapons they want. He also says that they shouldn't eat breakfast, or they'll throw up.
Naruto trains throughout the night and in the next morning, Kakashi shows up at the training area, late. He says that they have to get two bells off him and the ones who don't get a bell, are sent back to the academy and don't get any lunch. Naruto charges forward with a kunai, but Kakashi stops him easily, saying he didn't start the exam yet. The exam then begins.
