Moving to vBulletin!

OK, folks, it's official. We're moving from CS to vBulletin!

I've been working on the migration process for the last week or so, and it's looking pretty good at this point. The mods and admins will be working with me over the next few days to help iron out any remaining bugs.

I don't have an exact date yet, but barring any surprises, I'm hoping to do the final migration in about a week. In the mean time, please be sure that the email address attached to your account here is correct. Passwords from CS can't be imported to vBulletin, so in order to use your existing account, the new system will need to send you an email with instructions on how to reset your password.

To answer a few sure-to-be-asked questions:

Q: What data from CS will be imported into the new system?
A: All existing posts, your full account, including your post count, join date and most of your profile info and your signature

Q: What data won't be imported?
A: PMs, blog posts, gallery images and related comments, attachments and polls. You will also have to manually set your avatar.

Q: What's wrong with CS? Why vBulletin (vB)? Why not go back to IPB?
A: CS hasn't lived up to my expectations. It has been a huge disappointment in terms of features, performance and administration. The underlying technology has a huge potential, but unfortunately I think the company in charge has really blown it.

We chose vB partly because some of the largest and most successful forums on the net use it. It has a reputation of being very stable, reliable and secure. It is also a full-featured system that includes a lot of capabilities that MFG members and mods have been missing since we moved to CS. We decided not to go back to IPB because of their ongoing security problems. vB seems also seems better able to handle large loads.

Q: Will I still have access to my stuff on CS after the change, at least for a while?
A: Yes, that's the plan. There are still some issues to be worked out, but I'm planning to make the existing system available on a read-only basis for a while, to give you time to copy things off of it that aren't automatically migrated to the new system.

Although the gallery thing sucks since I spent like half n hour adding tags to all my images a few days ago. >_>

Now what skin are we going to be using?

I haven't picked any new skins yet. I'm not sure if I should take the time to do that before the migration, or if it would be better to get things switched over sooner, and add the skins later....

Super-duper-snooper News! You were right to pick vBulletin, the have some really sort of nifty features on there, and you're right about every successful forum being on a vBulliten board. I can name several. All of them very fun, but not as good of members there. >_>

Any special new features you got lined up for us already? Or you just focusing on the migration? Because that's good too. XD

Question: Are the images directly attached to posts lost for the transfer? For example, copy & pasting pictures directly from Google (other source) onto posts, are they lost?

Awesome, after doing a bit of research, I can't wait to move to vBulletin. Maybe now I'll be able to make actual paragraphs now without it being difficult :P

vB is full of lots of good stuff that isn't available on CS. As far as new stuff that's not part of the regular vB release, one thing I've added is a [youtube] BBcode that will let you embed youtube videos in your posts, rather than just link to them.

Imaged that are included with a post as an attachment (not displayed in the post) will be lost.

Images embedded in posts (where you can see them as part of the post) will be retained.
