Moderator Guidelines:

All MFG staff members have been asked to do their job under the following guidelines.

As one of the Board Founders, it's important to me that these guidelines are adhered to -- so while the mods are keeping an eye on you, I'd like to ask that you watch them too. Please keep in mind that it often takes new staff members a while to get the hang of the "MFG way" -- and of course no one is perfect. However, if any issues or problems come up, I would appreciate it if you would send me a PM or email and let me know. vBulletin keeps a detailed log of all actions taken by mods, so there's no escape for the guilty....

If you have questions about the guidelines, this thread is the right place to ask them.

1. Be courteous. If you can't respond to an unpleasant situation in a pleasant way, then ask another mod or admin to handle it for you. Better to say nothing at all.
2. Be responsive. If a member PMs you with a question, try to answer them promptly. Even a short "I don't know" or "I'm busy now, I'll get back to you soon" is better than making people wait a long time.
3. Be engaged on behalf of the forum. Mods should be active, with regular posts and other contributions. Help other staff when they need it, participate in discussions about improving the site and increasing traffic, volunteer to help with an occasional project, help answer how-to questions, greet new users in the introductions area, run an occasional poll or contest, etc.
4. Let the rest of the staff know if you're going to be away for more than 3 or 4 days. There is a thread for that purpose in the staff section.
5. Whenever possible, ask members to do things differently before taking action (other than minor edits). The idea is to not be heavy-handed, and to help educate them about what's reasonable on the forum and what isn't.
6. Be lenient. Although the forum has rules, they aren't cast in stone. Mods are selected in part based on their demonstrated good judgement -- so use it. For example, a heated debate in one context might be appropriate, and in another might be considered flaming. A few broken rules won't hurt anyone (most of the time), especially if it looks like the people involved are enjoying themselves. If you have to ask yourself whether or not something broke the rules, then leave it. The stuff that needs attention is usually obvious.
7. Encourage members to post. Responding to old topics is really OK in most cases. That's why we keep old topics around.
8. Remember that you are representing MFG, not just yourself. "Borderline" behaviour that should be tolerated in members will often not be tolerated for staff members.
9. MFG's policy is to keep old threads around as long as possible -- mass deletions in particular are not allowed, and if attempted will result in loss of your mod status and even potential banning. When deleting is the right thing to do, be sure to provide appropriate comments to help educate members about what they did wrong.
10. When a member's topic is edited, it's good practice to leave a comment behind very briefly saying why the edit was done and by who.
11. Thread locking should be used as a tool to prevent abuse, not to discourage posting. For example, even after a question has been answered, people might want to respond with a follow-on question, or make a comment about the answer.
12. Changing or deleting other people's posts, or PMs suggesting that members behave differently should be based strictly on the board rules, not on your personal opinions about what's right. If there's any doubt, ask an admin or a founder.
13. Only move threads if they have clearly been posted in the wrong place. If there's any doubt, then it's better to just leave it in its original location. Whenever threads are moved, be sure to notify the user who created the thread, and let them know why it was moved.
14. Don't berate members. There's no need to rub-in any inappropriate behaviour.
15. Keep in mind our overall goals: to provide a safe and fun community. Acting too much like a cop makes it not fun for everyone.
