I definitely don't see any harm in giving it a shot. I remember on the old board the Debate sub forum was relatively active, more active than say Creative Writing or Art boards but we still have them up while this isn't an Arts forum either. Just because the forum is centered around Anime doesn't mean it can't step out of that boundary. If anything a Debate forum would draw in more members and make the forum more entertaining. If it becomes inactive merge it with the lounge again. Seeing as more than 75% of the voters wants it, it should at least be given a chance.

The only funny thing about that though, is half of the 75% even participate in the debates that go on now. And I'm counting those that post just to say "Quoted For Truth".

I voted no. Debates can be held in lounge, where they are likely to get more attention (and supervision) anyways. I loved the 'Serious Discussion' and '18+' sections, they quickly bred flaming, hatred and the like...which is great for activity. Plus, in the lounge debates are more relaxed, less lame copy/paste posts.

People will be more encouraged to post debate threads if there is a debate sub forum. Posting debate topics in the Lounge is next to useless seeing as a debate requires maturity, intelligence and patience. A place like the lounge doesn't do much there, so debate threads are knocked off the first page quickly. A debate subforum doesn't and won't have new threads popping up every 10 minutes which makes it work.

Masked_Felix, You may be right but that argument doesn't have much of a base. You don't see a list of people that voted for what and the few people who posted in here definitely doesn't represent all of the 26 that went for yes.

Oh really? Of course, a few people that have posted in lieu of yes definitely doesn't represent all of the 26 that went for yes. 17 people in this topic that have posted make a majority of the debate consistent goers, and surely not all of them voted yes.

Even if they did vote yes, it doesn't mean it's good for the forum. Essentially, the Lounge is for the Serious discussions and topics that aren't spam. The Gas Chamber gets the garbage. What's being proposed essentially kills the lounge and makes a new section to hold all of the same topics, who's namesake of debate topics has no large activity to begin with.

First of all you can't go bumping old topics. Second of all because of already-pointed out reasons people are discouraged of even posting debate topics in the first place. You can't search up what isn't there..

Forums should go with what the majority of the users want, since the users are what makes the forum... as long as it has some reasonable logic behind it, of course. There are pros and cons of this but it's clear that the majority DOES wish for a debate sub forum and there's no strong enough reason to stand against it. Well at least for giving it a test run anyways.

None of you are wrong in any case but I just think it's something worth giving a try. Plenty of people (like me) really get into intelligent debates. The Lounge hardly is a place where people go if they want a serious discussion. That may be what it's there for but it definitely doesn't play out that way.

You're being silly. There's plenty of debate topics in the Lounge pages, Abortion, Evolution, Religion, etc. If one isn't there, make one. Also, about bumping topics, it IS allowed, as long as you have something new to contribute. /quote PUNXX
Should, but don't. This isn't a democracy. Sure, staff are open to suggestions but in the end it is up to them. If it weren't for staff, the users would BREAK the forum, not make it.

It's been given a try before. Twice that I can remember, and my memory sucks. It was called 18+ once, and Serious Discussion another time if I'm correct. If it was closed down twice, staff had a reason for doing so.

Lol, I was thinking the same thing.

We're still mulling this one over (sorta). If we do go through with it and it fails it'll probably be the last time for a very long time. I can see everyone who's voted in this thread so if I see you guys not utilizing that forum I'll come and kick your house down, that's assuming we go through with this.

By all means continue the debate though.

I stand by what I said before, and say that this is still just a really bad idea. The Gas Chamber exists for illogical and goofy conversations, and was meant to have the leftover room to be for serious discussion in the lounge. If your argument is that the lounge isn't serious enough, then you're clearly not looking in the same topic. I really don't understand why you guys are pushing for this like it's necessary, you're on a gaming and anime forum, not only do very few members know dick about current events, the majority of people attracted to this forum only come to talk about anime/manga and video games. The way I see it, you're just trying to add a new section because you'd feel like you're doing the members a favor, when in fact you're just pushing for a forum that we all know wll be doomed to inactivity.

Jonny, I hear ya. In fact I was initially part of the 'No' crowd. The thing is that old forums that have been brought back like Video Games for example have thrived well beyond what anybody thought it would. So we've revisited this idea more in depth to see if it can be done. If it can't we'll know that quite quickly and it will be quickly reversed (assuming we do it). We won't be doing this for sheer fan service, in fact if you look around I'm the one pushing to downsize a lot of the inactive forums. Some ideas have been met with success, others not so much. I'm not one to quash ideas without proper time and thought. In this case the history behind it can't always apply because MFG has changed heaps even since those forums were installed and disbanded. It's all about MFG evolving with it's members, staying the same never helps anyone so we have to keep up with the times. Whether this is the right direction, I'm not sure, but we'll soon see.
