Default Phpbb?

Questions for Admins:

What did vBulletin offer more than phpbb (in features)?

I was here for a long time and didn't notice that if you guys used phpbb or not. What caused you to switch?

And last question, how similar is phpbb to vBulletin?

I'm asking this because a local football organization asked me to make them a forum.

In fact when MFG first started it was on phpbb, as far as I understand. But that didn't last long and then they went to IPB. I believe the lure of vB is the added security and the features that you can get. As far as I'm aware phpbb is much more basic. Also, most of the major forums use vB so it seems a logical choice.

Ace is better suited to answer this though.

The cost really doesn't matter. They gave me a rather large budget and used some of it to register a domain name. Is vB paid monthly or all at once.

Many, many things. phpbb was a pretty basic forum -- back when we were using it, anyway.

The way it looks was one big thing. The admin side of phpbb was really bad too.

Not very. phpbb = low end, very basic. vBulletin = high end, very fancy.

I can definitely recommend vB. We also used Invision Power Board for a while, and Community Server. Invision was OK, but had (has) some serious security problems.

It's always changing, but when we were using it, IPB's security problems were bad enough that we got hacked, posts were deleted, stuff was lost/damaged. That was the main reason we moved to CS, which was always 100% secure. vB has been excellent that way too. I don't know much about phpbb from the security perspective, but I don't recall hearing anything terribly negative about it.

Could you list all the software you used and put an asterik next to it. Ideas are bouncing around.

You can get an owned license for $160, plus thirty bucks each year for updates.
VB can have much more space than other forums in addition to holding more members and content. Many forums have moved from phpbb to vb due to a change in size. VB to me is the best forum software around, tons of features and great security, great skinning potential as well.

Well, contrary to popular belief, Php-BB is not as basic as it looks. I'm sure most of you have only seen those basic php-bb 1.0 forums which are indeed very basic. But, having been an admin in both a Php-BB and vBulletin forum, I think that the latest version of Php-BB (v.3) rivals that of vBulletin. Just with a few more mods a php-bb3 can have most (if not all) of the features vBulletin has.

Though, I don't know much about security since that responsibility was another admin's one.

Security-wise, this board is many wrungs above what that one was (to me, anyway). I didn't have much of a problem breaking into it. From what I've seen, this host isn't weak to the same methods of session-hijack and script injection. vBulletin's flaws are pretty mundane in comparison, and require extended knowledge (embedding scripts and code directly into JPEG images, and other odd work-arounds) to exploit.

Look. If your budget allows, just go with vBulletin. You'll also have the members/admins here to ask if you need help with anything.

Like I said a lot of it went to registering a domain name. Anyway I looked at IPB and didn't like it. Phpbb has a new version out, and I am still considering vBulletin. But what the hell is CS?

CS is community server. Don't get it, it sucks bad. Only get it if you really want to screw these people around. As Ace said it apparently has potential but the CS team is a bunch of lack witted bums. CS is awful.

Go with vBulletin ... easily the benchmark for good forums.

So CS is out of the question.

2 Left:
