Questions for Admins:
What did vBulletin offer more than phpbb (in features)? I was here for a long time and didn't notice that if you guys used phpbb or not. What caused you to switch? And last question, how similar is phpbb to vBulletin? I'm asking this because a local football organization asked me to make them a forum.

In fact when MFG first started it was on phpbb, as far as I understand. But that didn't last long and then they went to IPB. I believe the lure of vB is the added security and the features that you can get. As far as I'm aware phpbb is much more basic. Also, most of the major forums use vB so it seems a logical choice.
Ace is better suited to answer this though.

Not very. phpbb = low end, very basic. vBulletin = high end, very fancy. I can definitely recommend vB. We also used Invision Power Board for a while, and Community Server. Invision was OK, but had (has) some serious security problems. |

It's always changing, but when we were using it, IPB's security problems were bad enough that we got hacked, posts were deleted, stuff was lost/damaged. That was the main reason we moved to CS, which was always 100% secure. vB has been excellent that way too. I don't know much about phpbb from the security perspective, but I don't recall hearing anything terribly negative about it.

You can get an owned license for $160, plus thirty bucks each year for updates.
VB can have much more space than other forums in addition to holding more members and content. Many forums have moved from phpbb to vb due to a change in size. VB to me is the best forum software around, tons of features and great security, great skinning potential as well. https://www.vbulletin.com/order/

Well, contrary to popular belief, Php-BB is not as basic as it looks. I'm sure most of you have only seen those basic php-bb 1.0 forums which are indeed very basic. But, having been an admin in both a Php-BB and vBulletin forum, I think that the latest version of Php-BB (v.3) rivals that of vBulletin. Just with a few more mods a php-bb3 can have most (if not all) of the features vBulletin has.
Though, I don't know much about security since that responsibility was another admin's one.

CS is community server. Don't get it, it sucks bad. Only get it if you really want to screw these people around. As Ace said it apparently has potential but the CS team is a bunch of lack witted bums. CS is awful.
Go with vBulletin ... easily the benchmark for good forums.
