I have been debating over this question for quite some time now. It seems infinity is a number explaining the limit of everything that nothing is beyond infinity. But also my friend says that it is just a symbol(the side ways 8) that expresses the limitless power of everything.
What do you guys think? |

@Hello
Woah seriously, don't type like that in the Serious Forum. You will get moderated Anyway, I had a 3 hour conversation with my friend about this, and we came to an answer: However, I forgot the answer, thus the power of infinity was proven to be beyond the human mind. Hopefully theres are some maths geniuses on this site, Lord knows theres a whole lot of intelligent people(see my IQ thread)

Numbers go 1,2,3,4,5...,100,101,102,103... etc, where does it suddenly go 99999998,99999999,INFINITY!!!
Its a concept, not a digit

Theoretically, infinity should not exist inside our universe.
Except possibly for the maximum size of the universe.

As per Wikipedia:
(symbolically represented with ∞) comes from the Latin infinitas or "unboundedness." It refers to several distinct concepts (usually linked to the idea of "without end") which arise in philosophy, mathematics, and theology. In mathematics, "infinity" is often used in contexts where it is treated as if it were a number (i.e., it counts or measures things: "an infinite number of terms") but it is a different type of "number" from the real numbers. Infinity is related to limits, aleph numbers, classes in set theory, Dedekind-infinite sets, large cardinals,[1] Russell's paradox, non-standard arithmetic, hyperreal numbers, projective geometry, extended real numbers and the absolute Infinite. Article: Infinity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Wikipedia is not always 100% accurate but in most cases it will give you a good enough guideline to explain things in general terms.

It said infinity is a different type of "number" meaning that it is still a number. Wikipedia is a site based purley on opinion. Anyone can edit that. I can go on there right now and type the infinity is a number. ∞
@rachet: It should come to a point where if you add a number plus a number, you will get ∞. Then if you add a higher number to that same number, you will get infinity again. |

Not everything has a limit. Take repeating digits, for example.
Say you divide 3 into 10. You'd come up with 3.33 repeating, which would go on forever and ever. There's no limit to this equation. Infinity is just that -- endless, uncountable, limitless. Saying that infinity IS the limit is a blatant contradiction of what it actually is.
