You don't think pot should be legal? From what I've heard, pot isn't even as bad as alcohol or cigarettes.

Anyway, I do have to agree that making Prostitution legal would also make it a lot safer. Also, being a prostitute is just as demoralizing as being a porn star, yet no one seems to bitching about porn. Funny, huh?

Oh I don't really have a problem with pot. Everyone I know smokes it nearly lol. If I spend a night with some of my friends, I usually end up smelling of weed the next morning. XP
I don't care what you do, smoke or dance to, so long as it doesn't harm others.
But if it comes down to legalizing it and you (general)had the last vote that would sway yes or no, I'd go for no.

But you're right about cigarettes and alcohol. I don't think pot ever really destroyed families as much as the other two giants. Cigarettes being olibterated would be a nice thing too.
I don't think Prostitution guarantees a safer world for the 'workers'. Like any job, al you need is one nutbag and you're fucked. It's a bit different to those fancy brothels they have in the US.

I saw a Louis Theroux documentary where he spent a week in one and they really do take care of the girls and make health checks ect, but that's a different world entirely to that of streets.
In a dreamworld, all those women who either choose or are forced into that life, could be given a decent job like most other people.

1-Safer...? For the pimps reaping millions or the women from 3rd world countries who are lied to about job-opportunities, duped into signing contracts, and then end up as legitimate sex-slaves?

2-Yes, it is ironic. Someone may be hooping and hollering about the evil of one thing but they're all for something else.

1. All of that wouldn't exist if it was legal, because it would be in a safer environment, and pimps wouldn't be allowed to beat up their prostitutes.

Compare:

Prostitution being Illegal:

Prostitute (At Police HQ): Somebody viciously beat me up!

Police Officer: Alright, explain the situation to me, then.

Prostitute: I was just prostituting, and-

Police Officer: PROSTITUTION IS ILLEGAL! TAKE HER AWAY, BOYS!

Prostitution being Legal:

Prostitute (At Police HQ): Somebody viciously beat me up!

Police Officer: Alright, explain the situation to me, then.

Prostitute: I was just prostituting, and once when I received my payment from a client, my pimp wanted to have 95% of the income. I said that I needed a bigger percentage of the money, because I need to feed myself. Then he started viciously beating me up.

Police Officer: Alright, we'll get right on it, then. Just give me a description of the pimp.....

*etc, etc*

Look at those two different scenarios for a bit.

If they can convince the govt. to legalize prostitution that doesn't mean that they will automatically become involved in the business.

Going by your logic, if they legalized selling weed than everytime a smoker met with dealer, there would be some govt. middle-man observing them and ensuring everything went "smoothly"--no. Once it becomes legal, that just means they're "Allowed to do it".

Now, continuing with prostitution, if it became legal than it would become legal for them to have women sign contracts and become "property" (i.e slaves). Legalizing prostitution makes slavery legal. So if they had a problem with that (and don't assume they would) then they would have to mandate that a contract cannot bind the hoe to the pimp in the sense that she is a slave and may not even be getting paid. But passing laws require other laws to prevent loop-holes and passing that would take time. Not only that, but opponents to the whole concept could prevent those loop-hole-preventation bills from being passed and then...it's just as corrupt as it was before (or worse!).

So it isn't the case where if the govt. chalked up a generic bill stating "Prostitution is legal" everything would fall into place (imaginary research on a cure for STD's, safety for the clients and investigation into contracts); they would have to follow through with the bill and pass other ones to keep the process as safe as possible. And even if they DID that they still have to ENFORCE it.

ANOTHER thing that comes up is the fact people are always looking at America for leadership. What kind of impression would we give to other countries (like, say...Iran) if they saw on the news that our cops pass by hoes on the street, ask for identificatin, and if they are "certified hookers" allow them to go on...? Or if said hooker complains about being raped and the police bust down Mr. Jones' door, grab him right in the middle of his hotdog and packers game, toss him in the car and take off, leaving behind confused and traumatized chilrden who may not even be able to keep their house because dad is in jail? What would countries think if we arrested Mr. Jones for forcing the hooker to continue to have sex with him but we did nothing to the hooker because she was "licensed"...?

Think about that.

How many time have you heard of a male porn star being demoralized or giving a shit?

The only pro's to prostitution being legal is that people will be able to pay for sex and get away with it scott free. Affairs will increase, addiction to prostitutes/sex ect.
