Using new energy sources isn't something that came to mind because of overpopulation, and sustaining life in an enclosed environment is going to be vital to space travel, since we aren't going to be jumping to hyper space to get to other planets anytime soon.

Fire can help us eat food without needing our appendix in the equation. It obviously wasn't the first reason people decided to use fire.
