If we can find out a way to get humans past the Van Allen radiation belts alive we could start a colony on Mars and it wouldn't be long before more colonies were formed on other planets and solar systems.

We are a long ways off from anything like that in ways. We would need to terra form and make ecosystems. Before that we would have to improve space travel and artificial living systems within an enclosed environment. We may need to do some modifications to live on earth soon. Such as moving where peopl live, building vertical farms, making new energ sources, and easier food to be grown.

Or we could just enforce mandatory sterilisation, which would be reversed when a couple wants to have children.

I guess scientists think 16 billion is when earth will be over populated, and I think that will be in the next 20 years perhaps. I do ont think that is the case if we build up and or live on the water ( like water world :P) But yea I think if we use resources and use science we can fit more than 16 billion. it would be easier to adapt the enivronments and use the seas for space. 16 billion is just in the places we live now and the restrictions of the hot and cold places and lack of land... Also we will have slighlty less land when the ice caps melt. yay, haha

What you quoted had a direct mentioning of space travel. It wasn't just about problems on the earth, but doing trial-runs of things that could be used on other planets on earth.
