I'm pretty sure no one thought the Earth was flat after the Greeks. And yes, I also prefer to think of the world never ending, and humans colonizing space. I'd also like us to create some sort of sentient being for competition.

gkrt, you made a topic specifically about 2012, we were talking about the end of Earth in general. 2012 was mentioned because many people talk about that being the time when Earth ends, but this topic is much more open than that.

Well hopefully by the the time this happens we can counter it, but I just don't want meteor to hit, that's a possibility and it would really screw any chance we have of surviving.

EDIT:I heard a prediction of the return of Atlantis, what do you think of that?

Chances of a meteor that could do damage is verrry low. Just think about it, out of the entirety of the universe, why would a meteor/comet hit us?

What about the meteors that orbit our planet? If one gets knocked off course, somehow, then it will hit us.

There is a meteor predicted to come very close to us in the year 2036 I think, but it's supposed to miss by a few thousand meters. Otherwise we don't have any meteors to worry about in the near future.

The ancient texts that describe 2012 as the end of the world, would be based upon the stars, and they will have calculated due to their movements that they would all 'dissapear' on the 2012'th. Which is actually a magnetic field reversal, which(I'm not sure of the details) among other, possibly dangerous things like climate change, would cause a massive difference to the constellations visible in the night sky. Being of a religious nature and not knowing anything about science, the ancient people would interpret this as the end of the world in a religious sense, not necessarily due to climate change or whatever.

I looked more into the whole meteor thing and found out the odds are very low, 1 and 45,000 of impact... But the thing is, it's going to pass us in 2029 then come close to us again in 2036. They have no way of calculating how the passing of 2029 will change the course of the meteor... And apparently it will.

The good news is, it's 880 megatons, so it wouldn't end the world anyway. The results would still be really bad on some populations depending where it hits though.

Don't see it happening myself. Even if the magnetic poles do shift, nobody knows what the effect will be... At least I would hope it doesn't end there. That's when I'm going to be finishing college.
