Default Dooms Day Collider (a.k.a. creator of black holes)

Some fear debut of powerful atom-smasher - CNN.com

This thing will be turned on in August. A lot of scientists believe it will affect the rotation of the Earth, and if the planet rotates any slower, anything not attached could be flung into space. I understand the chances are fairly slim, but one false move by these European scientists and we could all end up dead in a few months. Yay.

I can't believe they would risk the planet just for information about some bullshit particles. Seriously, why don't they do this in a space station or something??

I dunno, but I'm gonna go with the physicists that say there is a tiny chance of this destruction happening.

Um WHY are they doing this? The real reason I mean, cos this is just...stoopid.
So we're fucked if they fuck it up, is that what we're suppose to believe?
Bah I don't believe it. Good luck to them anyway, wasting billions on that thing when it could be put to actual good use.

Uh...I'm sorry, but this helps us understand how things are form, helps us understand physics, and much more. Why you guys do not seem to agree is beyond me?

As for the chance of us all dying, it is very low.

Quote:
he risk of a doomsday scenario was indicated by Martin Rees, with respect to the RHIC, as being at least a 1 in 50,000,000 chance.[9] With regards to the production of strangelets, Frank Close, professor of physics at the University of Oxford, indicates that "the chance of this happening is like you winning the major prize on the lottery 3 weeks in succession; the problem is that people believe it is possible to win the lottery 3 weeks in succession.

How many people in the planet care and do we need to risk(though I know it won't hurt us) anything to find out about atoms and blah blah?

How many people are of a decent intelligence and can comprehend the uses for understanding our universe?

Intelligence does not equal interest.
How does this help us understand the universe out of genuine curiousity?

Quote:
For decades, the Standard Model of particle physics has served physicists well as a means of understanding the fundamental laws of Nature, but it does not tell the whole story. Only experimental data using the higher energies reached by the LHC can push knowledge forward, challenging those who seek confirmation of established knowledge, and those who dare to dream beyond the paradigm.
Quote:
As we get closer to the grand opening of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) near Geneva, Switzerland, it seems the predictions as to what we might get from the high energy particle accelerator are becoming more complex and outlandish. Not only could the LHC generate enough energy to create particles that exist in other dimensions, it may also produce "unparticles", a possible source for dark matter. Now, the energy may be so focused that even the fabric of space-time may be pulled apart to create a wormhole, not to a different place, but a different time. Also, if there are any time travellers out there, we are most likely to see them in a few weeks…
Quote:
When activated, it is theorized that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and "missing links" in the Standard Model of physics and could explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass.[3][2] The verification of the existence of the Higgs boson would be a significant step in the search for a Grand Unified Theory, which seeks to unify three of the four known fundamental forces: electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force, leaving out only gravity. The Higgs boson may also help to explain why gravitation is so weak compared to the other three forces. In addition to the Higgs boson, other theorized novel particles that might be produced, and for which searches[4] are planned, include strangelets, micro black holes, magnetic monopoles and supersymmetric particles.[5]
Quite useful if you ask me.

I personally stand by believing that 5.8billion being used on this is ridiculous. That money could of been put to use helping people, but they make it to find out about stuff that is in no way useful to our survival in this world.
Just my opinion.

The more we understand about our world, the more technology we can create, the easier life can get.

What people, I ask? Some people need to help themselves, for example, Africa. The governments of Africa usurp the money put towards them, so basically we are feeding corruption. Nothing has helped.

If they lived like crap for a while without any aid, they will eventually do something about it.

The means of how money is put to use needs to change with regards to Africa. It doesn't change the fact that it's still needed.

It's great how America invades Iraq for this and that reason, but they can't see any point in overthrowing a goverment that lets it's nation, entire people wither and die.
Or how about we just do things the right way and use the money to make things better. Not give it to the corrupt goverment.

How about using that money to help the thousands if not millions of people in the US that are in the biggest rut of their lives becaus of your appalling healthcare system?
How about using that money to help rebuild some of New Orleans?

How about you ask the taxpayers of the country what exactly the money should be put to use for and I wonder if the majority would really choose this 'experiment' over all the things that are needed right here, right now.

They can fix the problem themselves, it is elitist to believe only we can solve the problems. Srsly, who says they don't have solutions? You realize before colonialism malaria and other diseases did not have a huge impact on infecting the people before we told them to live in large settlements?

If we went into another country and saved the people there, you people would just bitch about it again. Anytime we save, you guys whine. Hey, how about even if we give it to the damn people, the government still has absolute control over them?

You realize that the worst off person in America is still doing better than a majority of the world? Besides, health care needs to be completely off the board, no government intervention. Low taxes. Guess what? We've already spent a huge amount of money helping Orleans, Texas hosted thousands of people from Orleans for years. A lot of them are still here.

If we would just cut taxes, we don't have to worry about where tax payers money goes, because then they could spend it on whatever they wanted, included private organizations.

@Bulma: Seriously, this thing is plenty worth it's price. It could answer a lot of questions of the physical universe. I mean, denouncing it just because "it won't help our survival" isn't right. It's like saying all physicists and mathematicians are simply wasting their time. For one thing, it new discoveries could lead to new inventions, making our lives easier. And people would disagree on what would be a "better cause" for the money. It looks like a perfectly good cause to me.
