Some fear debut of powerful atom-smasher - CNN.com
This thing will be turned on in August. A lot of scientists believe it will affect the rotation of the Earth, and if the planet rotates any slower, anything not attached could be flung into space. I understand the chances are fairly slim, but one false move by these European scientists and we could all end up dead in a few months. Yay.

I can't believe they would risk the planet just for information about some bullshit particles. Seriously, why don't they do this in a space station or something??

I dunno, but I'm gonna go with the physicists that say there is a tiny chance of this destruction happening.

Um WHY are they doing this? The real reason I mean, cos this is just...stoopid.
So we're fucked if they fuck it up, is that what we're suppose to believe? Bah I don't believe it. Good luck to them anyway, wasting billions on that thing when it could be put to actual good use.

Uh...I'm sorry, but this helps us understand how things are form, helps us understand physics, and much more. Why you guys do not seem to agree is beyond me?
As for the chance of us all dying, it is very low. Quote:

How many people in the planet care and do we need to risk(though I know it won't hurt us) anything to find out about atoms and blah blah?

I personally stand by believing that 5.8billion being used on this is ridiculous. That money could of been put to use helping people, but they make it to find out about stuff that is in no way useful to our survival in this world.
Just my opinion.

What people, I ask? Some people need to help themselves, for example, Africa. The governments of Africa usurp the money put towards them, so basically we are feeding corruption. Nothing has helped. If they lived like crap for a while without any aid, they will eventually do something about it.

The means of how money is put to use needs to change with regards to Africa. It doesn't change the fact that it's still needed.
It's great how America invades Iraq for this and that reason, but they can't see any point in overthrowing a goverment that lets it's nation, entire people wither and die. Or how about we just do things the right way and use the money to make things better. Not give it to the corrupt goverment. How about using that money to help the thousands if not millions of people in the US that are in the biggest rut of their lives becaus of your appalling healthcare system? How about using that money to help rebuild some of New Orleans? How about you ask the taxpayers of the country what exactly the money should be put to use for and I wonder if the majority would really choose this 'experiment' over all the things that are needed right here, right now.

If we went into another country and saved the people there, you people would just bitch about it again. Anytime we save, you guys whine. Hey, how about even if we give it to the damn people, the government still has absolute control over them? You realize that the worst off person in America is still doing better than a majority of the world? Besides, health care needs to be completely off the board, no government intervention. Low taxes. Guess what? We've already spent a huge amount of money helping Orleans, Texas hosted thousands of people from Orleans for years. A lot of them are still here. If we would just cut taxes, we don't have to worry about where tax payers money goes, because then they could spend it on whatever they wanted, included private organizations.

@Bulma: Seriously, this thing is plenty worth it's price. It could answer a lot of questions of the physical universe. I mean, denouncing it just because "it won't help our survival" isn't right. It's like saying all physicists and mathematicians are simply wasting their time. For one thing, it new discoveries could lead to new inventions, making our lives easier. And people would disagree on what would be a "better cause" for the money. It looks like a perfectly good cause to me.
