The physicsworld one? Nah, it wasn't. They were just shooting light down fibre optic cable to simulate radiation properties.

The particle collider one, not so much. Sounds like they created something interesting, though it didn't last long.

And, everyday of the Earth existing there is a chance for black holes to appear and devour us. Thus if you want to look at the statistics, the chances are absolutely abysmal. If particles beating the Earth at the same speeds for billions of years cannot produce something, who says the hadron collider will?

So that aside, it was pretty obvious that this thing wouldn't end the world. There was a similar fear back when the atomic bomb was created. Some thought that the chain reaction it caused wouldn't end, and that it would split all atoms until everything was...gone.

Plus, the world's not supposed to end until December 21, 2012. Go figure.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with Island. Nothing bad's gonna happen. They wouldn't do this if they thought there was reasonable chance of a black hole forming and consuming the Earth.

I'm no physicists but some reactions can only take place at extreme conditions (i.e. Extremely high temperatures, high velocities, etc.) and the particle accelerator will help recreate those conditions in a safe, observable environment.

You gave me the perfect answer to work with Island.(too bad I suck at explaining)

Now just think of the Earth as a Cell. And the Particle generator scientist w/e'rs as the genetic scientist. They have very little knowledge about genetics, but they want to GE this Cell. So they think "Well, tampering with XYZ has a low chance of killing the Cell as far as we know" so they do and the Cell dies and they go "Oh well, turns out we don't know fuck all about genetics but we have learned something"

Its like that. They say "Well theres only a tiny chance of a black hole appearing" but they actually know fuck all about this sort of thing, definitely not enough for me to believe their claims of tiny chances. So they activate the machine and bam, black hole appears, and in the short time they have to live they think "Well, turns out we were wrong about that" before we all die.

Its not worth risking the whole planet for this. Maybe when we know more about it, through safer experiments, we could go ahead with it. Just think, would you play Russian Roulette for something frivilous, such as a Spa Pool or new Car?
