Perhaps there are some things man was never meant to tamper with.

Cop-out. We. do. not. fully. understand. what. we. are. getting. in. to. What part of that don't you get...? And you fail to realize the magnitude of any mistakes we might make. National Geographic actually has an article about this project; and one of their members had a dialogue with a head-scientists:

And we haven't died from a black-hole because we've never gone near one. If by accidence they create even a small one, it's gravitional pull would destroy the entire solar-system and escalate a power-struggle with the sun (possibly even overcoming it). We haven't faced an anti-matter apocolypse because up until now, there haven't been IDIOTS who mess with it and on no one knew of it back then. As for dark matter we honestly don't know JACK.

Now, I have read the article and realized what the true purpose of the operation is: To discover the God [Higgs] particle. Einstein's theory was that matter cannot be created or destroyed, and that matter and energy could transform from one status to the other. We have by far seen matter become pure energy but never have we wittnessed energy become matter. The theoretical particle has hundreds of times the mass of an electron and would be responsible for converting energy into solid matter; thus being responsible for the appearance/creation of matter. Hence, "God" particle.

Now, it will be very interesting if this particle turns out to exist. For atheists, they will assume this means the universe created itself...and that's obviously an irrational way to look at it. Let's just wait and see what they discover; praying/hoping/what have you that they don't blow up half the country with their atom-smasher. Yes, in case you forgot they are actually going to smash two atoms together at 99% the speed of light in an attempt to convert them into energy. They want to mimic conditions at the begining of the universe.

Something like this is indeed dangerous. I'm not really convinced anything will happen but, still, I understand where ANB is coming from. Researching into somethings can be scary business. You can't expect everything to go as expected.

I talked about this to my Dad, and he didn't seem worried much. I am not worried either. I don't think anything is going to happen. I do not deny that utter destruction is a possibility, but I think it is just too low of a chance to become a reality.

And I really hope they announce the date when they activate the machine. That way, like someone in this thread cleverly suggested, I can stay indoors with a tank of oxygen.

Speaking of which... if the Earth rotation's does slow down, will the atmosphere be flung outer space as well? That means that even with a tank of oxygen, I'll have only a few hours to live >_<. Crap. Not to mention, the Sun will be free to manhandle Earth with its awesome temperature. Not that you'll be around to die of sunburns, anyways.

Oh well. It seems like this year is a time of anticipated chaos. We got the end of the world on 2012, and Judgement Day coming up in a few months. So many theories! Can't they think of something good for once?!

In short, I am totally on Vivi's side with this.

According to National Geographic, they will launch it in one or two months. As for the chances, they claim it's "incredibly low". Interestingly, a scientist named Dane Barney didn't want to talk about what could happen:

Ya, I'm actually a little surprised it's going unchallenged like this. I mean we're complaining, but why haven't I heard any kind of protest from goverment figures ect.? Surely someone out there thinks being sucked into a black hole, ending all life on Earth and the earth itself is important besides us Ya, maybe the odds are incredibly low, who cares? It's still a risk not worth taking. And for what? To make life easier? Life's easy enough for me, thank you. I'd just like to live it.
