Well according to scientists on that day there is going to be a polar shift and we are entering the centre of the milky way galaxy. I think there's a black hole there.

Edit at gkrt: Lol, wut? So, you're telling me that in four years we're supposed to move a few (hundred? thousand?) light years. I know that since we're in the middle of it, it's not exactly possible to tell our exact position, but I had thought we were estimated to be somewhat on the edge of the Galaxy. Or at least far enough away from "the center" that it would take more than four years to put us in it.

I'd actually be curious to see the world end. Just to actually see it. >_>

Anyways, as for Mayans, they expect the world to end on that date due to the beleif that the world is stuck in a continuous loop. I read up a bit of info on it a few months or so ago and saw that they made multiple predictions that came out true. such as the World Wars.

Actually, they didn't predict apocalypse. 21st December 2012 is end of Maya's calendar. After old is finished, new one begins. Some apocalypse fanatic just announced it as an apocalypse.

And personally; I find it ridiculous to believe that some tribe living in woods ages ago, could actually predict something like that. Sure, they were ahead of their time, but gimme a break...

Actually, Black holes are quite a frightening thing. Though you can see them [as they suck up light] scientists assume and have measured that in a galaxy about a half light year away a large black area has such a huge mass that it really can't be anything other than a black hole.

Though for a blackhole to reach us by 2012 is very unlikely. Mostly because blackhole are almost always contained in a region and even a roaming blackhole would have to be sucking up...Jupiter right now to be here in 2012. Though being sucked up by one, I hear, would be quite unpleasant. Being stretched in every direction till all your bones start to snap and your ever elastic skin breaks up.

Actually, the Mayans weren't some tribe living in the woods. However, I don't think this will happen. It would be kind of cool to see the world slowly end around you; watching the sky fall and the ground swallow hundreds of people.

The Mayans up and disappeared mayn. After the conquistadores came, and mixed their blood with some spanish blood, gave most of them killing sicknesses, they left, their cities fell. And they disappeared, for the most part.

They were pretty advanced for their time, forming an incredibly accurate calendar, number system, etc etc.

As for the end of the world. Who knows? It could end tomorrow, but really worrying about it and trying to predict it only just makes it more horrible to bear.

I personally don't think it will happen. Because if they could predict that shit, they would've survived the sicknesses that made them die off.
