...a woman's breasts are such a big taboo in most of the civilized world, when it is quite literally one of the first things we lay eyes on upon being born?
This discussion actually came up in university today.

Actually, yeah. I mean ... when we were in Kenya, we were told that the dance we learned was traditionally meant to be done wearing nothing but a skirt, most of the girls practically screamed, and such. Of course, then there were the jokes about me and Paige getting black eyes ... and I was more 'uh, am I the only bi here?' ... but all in all, it's been built up in a sense. But thinking about it later on, when I wasn't surrounded, it's tradition. Hell, in Africa, the insides of the thighs are only kept covered because they're considered more taboo than the vagina OR breasts.
At a thought, it's probably because they're eurogenous zones, have nerve endings, are sensetive, or simply classified as a sex characteristic ... probably because they symbolise fertility (got that offa Wiki, but ... it makes sense in the bigger picture) - thus relating to sex, which is regarded as a taboo?

It's probably a big combination of social, historical, and cultural factors (the Victorian Era being a major contributor) that led to breats being considered a private part.
Basically, breats in our culture evoke of sex. Sex is a private act, and it's considered unacceptable to display sex, and therefore anything else that symbolizes it, in public. That doesn't explain why people aren't disgusted by cleavage though...

Uh, except, there are many more erogenous zones on a female's body than the breasts and the vagina, most of which remain uncovered, and a vast majority of those tends to be far more 'sensitive' for women than their breasts.
Also, historically, in almost every culture breasts are related to breastfeeding moreso than sex.

I don't see the breast as taboo but since most people now see it in a perverse way, it has become such.
I'm more fond of a woman's eyes than her breasts anyway.

*taps chin*
I did not deny anything. I just said that I like the eyes more than anything else.

I guess the breasts/vagina just seem to more explicitly suggest sex than the other body parts. Not our culture. We see breasts more as sexual symbols than maternal symbols I think.
