An individual is easily influenced by his/her environment, by the media, by culture/religion, etc... Easily influenced, one can say that what your actions, your way of thinking was already instilled on you.

I see a lot of brainwashing happening everywhere. A lot of people are confused. The worst of it is that there are a lot of gullible people out there. There is nothing so wrong about being gullible but there is a danger when people are gullible in important things.

Most people don't have a free mind though, they will usually bow to any authority without question.

My sister has studied Psychology and she was telling me stories about tests you can do.

(If you are going to try this, and it is easy to do - always get permission from the people who own the shopping centre / land first).

Dress up smart, aim for a security guard look, but don't have any badges or markings. Be presentable and well spoken.

As shoppers come by you, engage with a couple of them. Tell them that you are taking a survey or investigating something. Ask them to walk over to [an object of interest not more than 10m away - a pay phone or a bin], and then walk back again. When they get back, thank them, say that they did well, but don't offer any reason for the request.

Most people will do it and not even question why you would even want them to.

So people are intimidated by those with what the feel is authority. So what? Does that deny them to choose, no matter what the choice is based on? Of course not. Am I unfree because I don't decide to punch my father in the face? Absolutely not. I simply choose out of fear not to. It's still a choice.

So? There's no reason to go up against authority, unless that authority is undermining your rights or something. It'd actually be pretty stupid. It's not as though we are bowing to them. Authority is in place to instill order. A civilization could not exist without it. I really don't get why so many people have such a fear of authority.

The individual still has the sole responsibility to make the decision whether to believe or not and accept to do it or not but yeah still, brainwashing does affect me sometimes esp by tv commercial, magazine ads, etc.
