Not going to go into details (publicly, again), but I was screwed by the law in the way you describe (Raven - PM me if you want to know).
The best thing you can carry is chilli powder. Legal, not thought of as a weapon, but when thrown into someone's face will cause them major discomfort and reduce their threat to you.
