What the heck is it and why are so many people against it? I tried reading a Wiki article but I got bored after a paragraph or two so if someone could sum it up for me that'd be great.

IMO basic opinion:
It's a money gimmick. You have to pay for different things to be enlightened or whatever the StarTrek term is. Hubbard makes a sci-fi story and people believe it.
Basically, it's no different than Jedi or Trekki religion, only they're harmless and this isn't.
In regards to Hollywood, notice that the 100% accomplished actors/actresses and creme of the crop are no affiliated with this organisation. I'm talking about the true entertainers that don't need scientology aid and connections to truly gain notice and fame in Hollywood, the ones who aren't constantly in the tabloids.
Alot of scientologist that are asked about their organisation and brought to chat about whatever negative press it gets, get extremely defensive. A BBC dcumentary, Panaroma did it I think, shows this. Actors, leaders of different factions just won't let you get a word in edgeways, not even to try and rebut accusations.

I'd hang out with a Jedi fanatic sooner than I would a scientologist, not out of predujice, but becaue if I said one bad thing against them...I'd be shot...twice -_-

South Park did an episode about this, dedicated a whole oneand had an 'explanation' of what it was. I actuall thought this was a serious endorsement for a second for the cult lol.

I don't even remember the time when people didn't think Tom Cruise was crazy. Actually if it wasn't for him I don't think I would have even heard of Scientology.
