Most people generally do not accept this however, even though it is the constant factor that drives them, that in which is your ego/self interest/survival/greed, what ever you want to call it; it's what encourages you to strive and survive better off than everyone else. The brain, which is what controls you, or is you, is nothing but an evolved mass of a collection of nerves, which generates the basic instincts to survive. Our skills of logic and reasoning are just more advanced tools to better realize our basic instincts to survive. Humans work together for the sake of achieving greater survival for themselves; when someone threatens the basic instincts, that person is dealt with in a way where they would be unable to continue doing so, whether it be sacrificing that person's ability to fulfill their instincts to a greater degree, such as execution or isolation. I implore everyone reading this to embrace this ultimate truth, and to not apply logic that is hypocritical towards others performing actions to better their survival, and to stop pretending to be something you're not, because it will get you no where in life and/or will help you progress into something you don't want to be.

I encourage anyone to debate with me about this with an open mind. Thank you for reading.

First of all, this is the Lounge, not the Gas Chamber. Burningvegeta and Kei, please avoid making posts that have no relation to the subject whatsoever in this area. Also, Burningvegeta, his posts wasn't so big that he needed to split it into paragraphs.

On the subject, I agree that a man's basic instincts dictate that he should survive and live on above all else, but he has long now been able to overcome these instincts and develop emotions that allow him to value other things, including other people, or ideas like religion, faith etc, or even inanimate objects, above his own life.

Self sacrifice will usually more than always be for selfish reasons. If it is for someone you love, it is because you love them and it is in your interest to protect them or to feel good about yourself, to avoid being left behind without them, etc. No matter the decision, you can find a basis of self-satisfaction. If we never gained anything from what we did, we would do nothing at all.

Animals work on basic instinct. All they try to do is survive and more often than not, they'll attack other animals in order to do so. The only thing we have on animals is written language and technology, but we follow the same principles. For the most part, we've avoided (in countries that aren't in terrible conditions) having to kill each other to survive and do it as a past time. We deserve some credit for that, don't you think?

When I read over your post again, I don't really see what you're trying to get us to do.

People have sacrificed themselves for perfect strangers. It's because you care. Not selfish but selfless.
