I'm not going to attempt to tell you what was going through your mind at that moment, but the logic I'm trying to use here helps me conclude that you most likely did it for the sake of your own life, just like everyone else. Your selfishness just happens to come from enjoyment from loved ones, and in return, you give them help and enjoyment.

Lets think about this though. . . That person is like any other animal, treated as the underdog of the "pack", but wants to be recognized as something higher, so they do something for recognition for the sake of fulfilling their instinctive desires to a greater extent. If that person believed in an afterlife, then "leaving" the mortal world is technically ascending them self into a higher standard of life, right? Otherwise, there's no purpose to end their own life, because the point of life is to survive.

I'm not attempting to defend atheists or atheism or take a side, but I want to point out that you're all most likely dealing with immature atheists that have nothing better to do. It's not like all atheists automatically attack anyone who believes in a god or gods, nor is it like all Jews are greedy or all Christians are intolerant to difference.

You cannot explain why a mother would sacrifice herself for her child. It is LOVE. Unconditional love. To say a mother went through child-labor for some twisted, hidden agenda is disrespect to humanity itself. How many hugs did you get, I wonder...?

Like I've said before, selfishness is not necessarily an evil thing, and that it being classified as something negative is merely a human invention, like swear words being naughty, trashy words. And didn't you ever hear of European and American peasants and farmers marrying at young ages and producing about 12 children to help with farming? Or China's breeding control policies? *sigh* Actually, I explained the truth with my own, true feelings and personal experiences and connections with other people AND my knowledge of facts obtained from the study of biology, human sociology and the study of other organisms. And how is it degrading humans? If anything, it's just showing much better we are at surviving then other living life forms.

It isn't the truth to say "humans do ____ because _____" because nobody acts the same way. You can try to cop-out and say any kind of interest in the well-being of another person is selfish, but there's a point where it is no longer selfish.

There are plenty of examples of people doing things to better other people's lives at the expense of either their life or a higher quality of living. That musician who did that "cat's in the cradle" song donated pretty much all of the money he made from doing music to charities. Quang Duck or whoever set himself on fire as part of a protest. Fuck. There are people willing to blow themselves up with their enemy for the sake of their people--I'm sure the common response would be to obtain virgins, but that's hardly a legitimate reason. There's more than just that group of people that do that sort of thing.

Sometimes I'll give people money for lunch just so they can keep from being hungry; I don't do these things to make myself feel better. Go somewhere else with this crap.
