I think this actually sums up why many religious people can't be taken seriously (note: I'm not referring to you Felix). For them believing in the bible and keeping everything simple is convinient. Those people also tend to take the bible by word not seeing that it actually is nothing but a very old book in which people of this age put down their moral and ethic view of the world. Funnily enough it's these people who can't read between the lines: Spread love and treat others the way you want to be treated. They just read: Anyone who doesn't believe what I'm believing is a failure. (And failure used to mean "should be killed" for a long time in history)

They discriminate those of us who believe in God. Turnabout's fair play but I see your point. Let 'em rave and rant about how there's no god. Let them live with the belief that once they die that's it and thus, have no purpose in life.

Lisa, I'm speaking personally for myself and my family, but we don't take the Bible word-for-word. Religious folks are given a bad name by Southern Baptists who take the Bible for every word and don't look at it in difference points of view. I don't take the Bible like that. I realize how long ago it was written and by whom it was written, so there's no way I can read that and just nod the whole time. I question everything I read and use a lot of the parables as metaphors. I don't think everything in the Bible necessarily happened, but I think they are used as a simile to represent something deeper. Nearly all religious people disagree with me, and that's why I no longer go to church. But I'm just saying, don't generalize a group of people because a few take everything literally.

I mean no offense when I say this, but honestly, religious people take questions as a direct hit to their faith, just like Empathy said. This is why Atheists are hated without end by avidly religious folk. On the other hand, most Atheists are total dicks that do discriminate, and they don't pull punches.
