I've been listening less Punk lately, compared to my highest Punk-days. I can't stand new "punk", which includes bands such as Green Day, Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan.. Hurl.
I'm not an expert on Underground-punk, but here are the best punk bands alive (or not): Sex Pistols, (Old) Bad Religion, The Misfits, Ramones, The Clash, Black Flag, Anti-Nowhere League and The Exploited. Also the pre-punk Rock-Gods Iggy Pop and Lou Reed are amazing. Also older grunge is pretty good, like Nirvana, Melvins, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Meat Puppets.. But most of those bands are merely punk, so. I love the attitude, and the complete resistance and indifferency against the mainstream. The bands are really 1% skill, and 99% attitude - And that's always better than 99% skill and 1% attitude. If you want to grow independent and see the world in a less naíve and gullible light, Punk is really the way to go. Punk on, punks. (And soon-to-be-ones) |

I find the whole punk image a bit of a cliche'. However that being said, I used to be right into the whole Punk thing.
As much as I used to love them I HATE the Sex Pistols, I am sitting here not even knowing why I do, however it may be 'cause everyone idolises them as the best Punk band ever. You know why they were so popular? THEY WERE A BOY BAND! I am sure most of you know that however, that is if you ever learned much about the scene. IMO I believe that the Ramones were one of the best ever Punk bands, they had the whole raw sound and image that went with punk, yet they still managed to write catch music that not only Punk orientated people could appreciate. In that way not only were they one of the fathers of Punk (they played gigs with future Sex Pistols members in the crowd) and may even be the link to Pop Punk. I used to hate all pop Punk with a passion, however since high school, my music taste has grown and now while I listen to old skool and underground punk every now and then, I am more inclined to listen to a bit of everthing, new school punk included. I hate purests, i really do. Sometimes i believe that people will disregard another band or sound, just because it doesnt fit with their hardocre appearance. I think this because I used to be the same way... This is coming from some one who now listens to people like Jack Johnson (slow melodical guitar surf music, however, that is just an example, i dont actually only listen to soft music, Jack is about the only one). I think I will turn my back on the trends and try and be completely different... by joining another trend... oh wait... how do you spell cliche?

I hate that stuff too. I more hate the fact that alot of people think that's what punk is, or say there are no real punk bands anymore (which is untrue) and spankthemonkey, I really wouldn't consider the Sex Pistols a boy band...I mean....huh? 0_0 Boy bands are created to make pre-teen girls swoon over them. Saying that this was what the sex pistols set out to accomplish is just not true.

The Sex Pistols WERE created, they didnt just meet up and say 'Hey, lets start a band'.
They were created to exploit the hype of the trend, that is what boy bands are created for, not to make teen girls swoon.

Punk. I like punk, just not the over-played s**t. Greenday's songs are SO overplayed ive stopped watching Music Channels, Commercailtized(sp?) bands now only play for money, which i hate!
Im not sure i think this is more metalish kinda stuff but this are the bands i listen too now. Otep Breaking Benjamin Saosin SR-71 Panic! at the disco Thats what im always listening to now-a-days.

Ok, the sex pistols did focus on their image, theres no doubt about that, but they were formed to push the limits of the time (as well as get some cash of course) and say 'f**k you'. That was basically their goal. I believe this is quite a different goal than a typical boy band, whose plan is to get in magazines and be heart throbs for a few years.

I understand what you are saying Napa, however the main drive of Boy Bands is to create a hype and image in order to milk the trend. By making the little girls wet there pants over the band, they get all crazy and lap up everything to do with the band which equals money.
The Sex Pistols were well know and got themselves into the news and everything, is that not the same? Sid was the only one who was actually a Punk, and he was basically just like one of these fan-girls of today, he was formed in the image of that which he idolised. However he truely sucked as a human being... He once threw a shot glass at the lead singer of a band (not sure who its was but I think it was the Buzzcocks) but missed and hit the fellas girlfreind in the eye... she was blinded due to this. If you want some great Punk tunes, check out Lars Frederikson and The Bastards. Lars seperates himself greatly from the sound produced by Rancis, its raw but its great. Some of the best Punk music ever made in my opinion.

The reason why I don't like The Ramones as much as, for example, The Sex Pistols, is because I can't stand songs like "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" or "Let's Dance" - They don't represent the anarchist break of old habits Punk is in its prime. Creating your own ways, and breaking old rules is Punk's most important message, and the raw sound accompanied by snotty vocals (best represented by Johnny Rotten) are the best way to bring out this new ideal. That's why Punk is such a phenomenon.
Ramones are more like, as they said it themselves, The Beatles.. On speed. |

I dotn hate Gangsta rap but it aint my favourite. However who cares, that is not what this thread is about.
Thats a good point there S.Gohan, The Ramones always classed themselves as Rock, never punk. They were thrown into that catergory. A good Punk band not as well know is Stiff Little Fingers, their are Irish IIRC and have been around for a while, I think that they are still to gether or did a gig not to long ago but I may be wrong. Best Song: Alternative Ulster

Well the ramones don't always sound punk because they were the foundation. They started (more or less) the basic idea and sound, and other people ran with it, such as the sex pistols. hm, I don't know anything about stiff little fingers. I thought they were an early goth band. What did you mean when you said their IIRC?
