They killed one of your guys. You'll need to send a few Swordsmen along to prevent losses. However, you can't carry as much stuff back, and it makes your army slower. I think it's a beneficial trade off.

Yes, slightly.

Mixing 2 Swordsmen in with your Spearmen prevents losses, however decreases speed. I find it more beneficial to send more Spearmen, since it saves a lot of time and with the additional salvaged resources I can replace my losses easily. But oh well, it depends on your preferences.
