Default "Family" Movies

When a movie is advertised as a "family movie", usually it just means "A kid's movie that adults will sit through because they love their kids so much". I think that very few family movies are actually worthy of the "family movie" brand, because they all concentrate on a single kind of family; Two young parents and one or two seven year olds. When I was 14, I never watched any of these movies with my parents and younger brother.

So what movies are really "Fun for the Whole Family"? If I had to choose just one, I'd go with "Rocky", because it really does have something for everyone. There's a love story for drama fans, A few montages for musical people, a bloody fight at the end for action fans, and a small element of documentary on boxing and boxing training. Definitely a movie anyone can enjoy, unless they don't like it.

So what movies do you think really deserve to be called "Family Movies"?

I would say Home Alone or How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966) because I enjoy watching them during the Holidays with my Family.

a Docu on boxing? you do realise that most boxers laugh at Rocky's training and fighting style, dismissing it as a joke.

Family Film? obv, anything by Disney/Pixar especially the disney golden age with snow white, hell, i could go and watch Aladdin or Lion King anytime and enjoi them

The Fox & The Hound is a good family movie, as are most Disney flicks.

On that note: Lion King 1, thats a marvelous movie and even adults should be able to enjoy it.

Anyway, I found Shrek to be quite hilarious. I think its the first of the childrens movies to have adults only jokes that children wouldn't understand.

Well, it defininitely isn't the most important part of the appeal, but I don't know anything about boxing except what I learned from Rocky. I realize that movies don't usually capture really good athletes accurately, but if you don't know anything about boxing it can teach you how the rules of a match work, and convey the atmosphere of one as well.

But that's not what I want this thread to be about. It isn't a Rocky thread.

The Shrek movies are defiantly family oriented. Superhero movies are also often said to be "fun for the whole family" and they usually are (not including movies like The Dark Knight")

Most of all the disney movies/pixar are family movies. Classics such as christmas specials are too. Christmas classics like Rudolph and the Grinch really brings out the happy family feeling.

I'll agree with anything by Pixar, except Shark Tale, which wasn't fun for anyone, let alone the whole family.

(EDIT)

Shark Tale was by DreamWorks? Sorry. I always get the two studios mixed up.

I thought Shark Tale was a awful movie and it was not funny at all unlike the other Dreamworks movie. Another good family movie would be Back to the Future and Star Wars 4-6.

Halloween nights I like to watch old classic horror movies with my Mom or my Sisters like The Wolf Man and Dracula (The 1931 movie not the 1992 remake).
