Default To Kill A Mockingbird

One of my favorite books; read it about 3 years ago and reread it awhile later.

To those of you who read it; how did you feel about it overall? What do you think about the characters? Did it have any effect on you at all? As a piece of literature what do you think about it?

Discuss it, basically. I hope this thread reveals a lot of readers...

I thought it was a good book. Extremely sad.

No effect really on me, because I don't think I could ever really connect to the book, since I've never lived in the south, never experienced extreme racism. It saddens me, but I've never really had to deal with it?

It was a basic english book. Good, but not the best for me.

Read it in eighth grade. I thought it was okay, though I'd probably like it better if we didn't have quizzes on it every other day.

I read it recently. I thought it was a good book, although it wasn't my favorite.

Read it for GSCE, and haven't really read it since. I meant to read it recently, but it just ended up propping up my laptop (where it is now). It's a shame because it's a damn good book, I just can't really force myself to read it again.

As for how it affected me... it didn't really. I don't mean to sound pretentious, but I was never racist, and I knew the shit that some people had gone through. It just highlighted what I already knew to be true.

Atticus >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Broly though.

EDIT: Argh, I shouldn't have invoked Broly's name. It was meant purely in jest!

What I meant by "affect" was "what feelings did it give you," or anything like that.

I agree, Atticus is one of my favorite literary characters.

Well in that respect, I really can't remember. It's been about 4 years since I read the book. Sorry.

Atticus was a great character though. He had so much depth to him.

Nah, it's fine. As I said in the original post I read it a long time ago also.

What I think alot of people don't know about it is that the book isn't supposed to just be about racist people in the South. It's more of a look inside the nature of good and evil, how both exist with each other, and how it develops inside individuals based on the world around them. It's a very deep book to me.

Yep. There's definately a reason they teach about it in schools even today.

Its been a few years since I read it, but I liked it even though it started off a little slow. To be honest its not a book I'm ever going to care to read again, but it's not one that I'm going to forget. I can't relate to it, but it still has an impact on you, especially Atticus' character; grace, intelligence and modesty work great with his character. I found that this is one of the few books where there's really no way you can hope the bad guys win, and its one of the few where the bad guys do win.

This definately one of my favorite books. I actually saw the movie first in like 5th grade before I ever read the book, and I thought the movie was powerful, sad and mysterious.

Great book. For it's time it was radical. :)

I hope they remake the movie soon.
