For me I usually get an idea but I don't know how to get the story started. Right now I'm doing a story that should last "7" books and I'm on the first one. The funny thing is I have all these idea's for later story's but I don't know how to start the journey. I want the beginning to be as good as the middle and end but its hard since you have to find a way to show who your characters our and then make story's as interesting as later story's where you care about the character. So what about you guys, is this something that happens to you?

I can get started pretty easy. My motiviation can lag some but I'm pretty decent with that. My problem is limiting myself. As my recent 'rant' in the discussion thread can attest to I have trouble keeping focused on just one thing as my mind is always churning out new ideas. Granted, most of them get discarded as worthless for a story but those that make it through always call for my attention while I should be working on something else.

Yeah, same here. Starting is easy. Finishing it out is the tough part (Or rather putting it on paper. Most of the time, it's already all finished and written in my noggin)

Starting is the hardest part for me. Not that I don't want to start, it's just the start is the first thing the reader will read, so I can't mess it up.

Starting is always easy. I always have plenty of ideas on how to start a story, introduce the characters etc. Writing it all down is a little pain, but nothing much. The difficult part is actually finding something to keep you writing the story, and not give up after 10-15 chapters because you are too busy, the story is going into a particularly hard part to write, it's taking you a lot of time to get into the main part etc. And this ability to stick to what they are writing and see it through the end is what separates writers from people with just good ideas, IMO.

Starting for me has always been the easiest. I love to plan and figure out where I want it to go and how I want it to get there. Then once I start writing it gets harder, infinitely harder in fact. Figuring out how I want it to end is always the hardest part so I often take ages to actually plan it out.

Yeah, I find starting easier, to be honest. Because at that point int the story, although you've planned it out in your mind (though I just develop as I go along), you can be as adventurous and creative as you want to be, and there are only a few rules you need to follow - e.g. introducing your main character, keeping their identity a secret, the setting of the story etc.
I find continuing harder, because I don't want to repeat what I've said too many times, or repeat facts that I may have forgotten about. Though I should really re-read to stop that. xD but sriously ... you're limited a bit more as you progress, because you know that you need to draw the chapter or story to a close at some point ... Or at least, that's what I figure.

Ending can be a real challange. Getting something that sounds as good as the rest of the story. I find endings to be the hardest. I want to make the final moments as compelling as the rest of the story but I've yet to succeed, IMO.

I use to find starting the hardest part. But that was because I felt obligated to start out with description, and I always liked starting pieces with dialogue. However, once I realized that no one was forcing me to write that way. Then, eventually, starting off in general became easy.
What I find difficult, is staying motivated. I often get bored with my current story and think of better one.. Then the cycle repeats.. |

Well you guys are ahead of me at any rate, lol. My biggest problem was (last time I did a fiction anyway) is that all I did was plan out the story, and rarely post the chapters up. On the couple of occasions I did, I ended up editing it so many times that I go back to the planning again ...
Motivation was, and still is maybe the biggest problem of all. I used to only post the next chapter after I get at least one comment from it, I pretty much didn't care later on.
