Well not thinking about where to shade, cos that's up to you and the drawing itself, but to get nice shading effects, shade with the side of your pencil and smudge it with you fingers. Just rub the penciled part with your fingers. That gets simply and great shading effects.
Look at drawings that have shading in them and that can help you determine where you could put them in your own work.s Or just do a few trial and error runs. I've found that if you're drawing muscle characters that after the intial detailing of muscls you can get away with putting some shades anywhere really, just to experiment.

Alright, in my experience, shading by way of smudging does not add much depth. You need to vary how much pressure you put on the pencil when you shade to create more dramatic light and dark areas. Contrast is also key. If your picture is a line drawing, you need areas of extreme white and extreme dark as well as all the greys in between, it adds a great affect to pencil drawings and makes them pop more.
To make things incredible.. I dunno... I'd start with just cleaning up your pictures, making sure the lines are clean and straight...?

Work with basic anatomy, maybe buy some anatomy books, do some research and then go experiment like crazy. Find a process you like and adapt it to your needs.
Work on shading, contrast, blending, defining details, silhouettes, patterns, negative space, etc... just the basic art elements that any great piece is comprised of. You should always work on basics before going pro. These websites may be able to help you: Manga Tutorials - How to Draw Anime & Manga Style www.BakaNeko.com Draw Furry - how to draw furry art, photoshop tutorials, comics and manga tips I think a good rule of thumb is to subsume any basic aspects (meaning a well founded understanding for basic anatomy and design approaches) of design before branching off into a particular style as well. It's not like you have to go to school for it, just research and experiment. When you find what you've wanted all along, you'll appreciate the work you put in to get there.

I suggest just going out and practising as much as possible. Take a variety of pictures and draw them. This will help you learn to draw in different ways and develop your skills. This is how I learned to draw anyway and it worked.

In order to draw properly, you also need to be able to draw action scenes. Like Raven suggested, learn about human anatomy and the way that the body looks when it moves in certain directions. Learn to draw facial expressions by drawing moody pictures etc.
