Secrets?

So in most story's their are Secrets, like in Bleach their is a huge Secrets reviled at the end of the soul society arc. Like wise in Harry potter each book has Secrets reviled. So when you are writing a story and you want to have a big secret slowly reviled in each book how do you give out small bits of info with out making it obvious what that Secret is? I have some general idea's of how to do this but I want to hear what you guys think to see if their are other things I can do too.
