Dystopian Everything.

I love dystopia. I love it in books. I love it in movies. I love it in games. I love it in manga. I've apparently felt this way for a long time, I only say it now because I learned a new word while reading about 1984 (the book; which I am presently reading and is quickly on it's way to becoming one of my favorites).
[The word is Dystopian, if you didn't catch that]
I was reading a list of things with that general premise, and a surprising amount of them are my favorite things. Jack Londons' The Iron Heel, Ayn Rands' Anthem, Lois Lowrys' The Giver (Given, I read that when I was 10 and wasn't fond of it but I'm going to re-read), Battle Royale, V for Vendetta, Judge Dredd, Battle Angel Alita, Jericho...
I could go on for a really, really long time.
I'm absolutely elated that I can put a specific word for a genre of things I like that isn't just post-apocalyptic. Though I suppose that would work just the same, but...Dystopian is just that much more specific. Isn't it just wonderful how broad language is so that we can zero in on one particular thing in a broad spectrum of similar things?

Have you read Brave New World? Seems like it would be up your alley, in more ways than one.
I love Ayn Rand too. Atlas Shrugged is one of my favorite books (another dystopia). There are some things about her writing style that I don't care for, but the ideas she talks about are amazing. |

I've been meaning to read Brave New World, my final for my british literature was writing an essay about which (1984 or Brave new World) related more to contemporary society. So I know the basic premise of it.
I've read Atlas Shrugged, which was the most recent Ayn Rand book I finished, as well as The Fountainhead. I believe she has some other books, but I haven't had the money to venture to the bookstore yet. Needless to say, I <3 her. |
