What about the last Great Ninja War? (During which kakahsi was 13, and obito was alive) During that there where thousands of Shinobi fighting the other villages. Kakashi said that only 9 would graduate to become "Proper" genin. I don't know if that means anything but it could.

The thing just doesn't add up.

Plus, think of the attack from the Kyuubi, the Great Ninja war, and the attack by Orochimaru/Sand. All of that would add up to leaving maybe 50 shinobi left

Yes...thats exactly what I did....I listed facts from the series and gave an estimate of about how many shinobi left (40-60). Yet It doesn't make sense really but whatever, it's a manga not soap opera or something.

You can't compare armies in our world to armies in the Naruto world. Ninja's in the Naruto world can make forest's (Yamato) and take out enemies using water dragon techniques (Zabuza), a 10 man Konoha army with all elements covered would probably be enough to knock out a 10,000 man roman army by just using Justsu's. Im guessing Konoha has the strongest families, which is where their power lies if you think about the Sharingan and the Byakugen etc in the Naruto world it comes down to quality not quantity, if you think of Kakashi Gaiden where Minato comes to help Kakashi and wipes out an entire group on his own. Around 50-100 genin to Jonin sounds about right.

There's a difference between outnumbered and swarmed. For a continent, having an army with less than a few thousand is unrealistic. You do understand that Napoleon's Grand Army consisted of 600,000 armed soldiers, right? Ancient Chinese could mass advance forces at 300,000. The Roman Empire had military forces in the 300,000s. Now, I've always thought of the Naruto continent to be considerably large, especially because it took Gai nearly a week to travel from Suna to Konoha. That's about 1/3 of the way across the continent. Now, my estimations have 450 per Village. Considering the distance between each, it's difficult to believe that the governments actually have that much influence over their land. Lets do some math. If there are 450 ninja per Village and we'll say there are roughly 250 civilians for every soldier (based on Roman and Han military numbers), then each country would have around 100,000 citizens each. At best, that's a population of 500,000 between a continent probably the size of the Han Dynasty (which had around 6 million km2. That's comparable to continental US's 8 million km2.)

I did some calculations and half of the Naruto continent would be around 1,000 kilometers. The Han Dynasty, my base, was around 3,000 kilometers long. I couldn't find the exact numbers, so I had to punch in a western Chinese city to an eastern chinese city. 1/3 of that would obviously be 1,000 kilometers. It took Gai 6 days to travel from Suna to Konoha, the estimated 1,000 kilometers. He needs roughly 8 hours of sleep. That brings his travel time to 4 days or 96 hours. 1,000 divided by 96 is oughly 10 kilometers per hour. Now before I get comments on how unrealistic that is, figure this. Lee can do 500 laps. Lets assume that track is a standard 400 meter track. That means Lee does 200,000 meters from running 500 laps on a 400 meter track. That's 200 kilometers as training. Lee does this in a day. Imagine what Gai can do. In fact, I remember Gai being able to lap the perimeter of Konoha 500 times within a day on his hands.

So anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that Naruto society is highly overestimated, and my numbers prove it. Of course, I had to estimate on the fuzzy parts, but what more do you want?

I believe this army is comparable to the Mushu division in strength, but does so in being twice as strong per man, as they are outnumbered around 2-1
