I'm pretty sure it'd be more reasonable to say Itachi's genjutsu is more powerful. He does have the most powerful genjutsu seen so far. Either way, he could just Goukakyu them, instead.

Err, it's stated Itachi's affilation with Akatsuki was a simple ruse, he loved his village, and put the stability of the village above all else - he never killed anyone for Akatsuki and never captured a Jinchuriki. Why do you think he didn't kill Kakashi when given the chance? And fled from Jiraiya?

you guys keep mentioning canon and a statement itachi supposedly made about both him and kisame getting killed by jiraiya...but, if I remember correctly, that was something that happened in the anime AND NOT the manga.

I did a quick skim, but I don't recall itachi saying that in the manga, thus it's not canon. Anime makes shit up.

That's a poor translation, but their assumptions were incorrect.

Itachi states that if he and Jiraiya fought, they would probably kill each other. After meeting, their views changed. Kisame clearly points out that he saw no reason to retreat, and that Itachi should have been able to handle Jiraiya, and Itachi was already weakened at that time. Itachi is most certainly stronger than Jiraiya. Any statement is always open to being contradicted by later statements and events, and that's exactly what happened here.
