'K, now THIS is something that's been bothering for a while. I can usually find solutions to plotholes rather quickly, but not this time.
If Naruto failed three times before becoming a Genin, why the hell were all of the nine rookies the same age as him? Shikamaru and Chouji and...fuckin' Saucegay...are seen during Naruto's first year. Did they all flunk too??? THREE TIMES??? SAUCEGAY??? BANKAI??? This has me completely stumped. Can anyone figure this out, or is it a genuine plothole?

That much is fact. The question is, if that's the case, why are Sasuke, Shikamaru, Chouji, etc. in his first-year class, but only graduate in the third year?

Sasuke is seen entering the Academy when he is 7/8. Shikamaru and Chouji are seen in the room with him. Naruto took the exam and failed three times, meaning he graduated in his fourth year. So therefore, they were in his first year.

I thought this was explained in the Zabuza fight. Youngins are kept safer from ninja society because of the old tests that were practiced in the Mist Village, therefore they are forced to graduate later than their predecessors.

Then explain it, douchebag(s).
Itachi graduated in his first year. Sasuke was the best in his classes every year, so why didn't he do the same? The only thing that held Naruto back was failing the test multiple times, which I doubt Saucey and Shikamaru did.

Just because Sasuke was the best in his class doesn't mean that he's good enough to graduate early. Is your Valedictorian good enough to advance to college from elementary school? Naruto obviously tried to test out several years in a row, but he wasn't good enough to pass the test, let alone be recommended or allowed to leave early. Open and shut case.
