No, the Sharingan can only be overpower by a Mangekyou Sharingan. It was just a clone.

Deidara's eye is trained to counter the sharingan, but he still got cought in one sharingan genjutsu after. I'm saying, we don't know how it works out, then.

Ummm...a stronger Sharingan can overpower a weaker Sharingan. Which is exactly what happened.

It was Genjutsu.

Simple, Itachi send a crow clone/KB variation (actual copy) to meet Sasuke. It's pointless to use genjutsu against a Sharingan user since they would see right through it. Now if Itachi activate his MS & use Tsukiyomi, it would be different story. Itachi use a crow clone/KB variation (actual copy) to inform Sasuke because he would already know that the Sharingan can't tell difference between the user & his/her clone (actual copy). Plus, Karin & the others saw the feathers of the disperse crow clone, so it wasn't a genjutsu since they weren't cast by one.

Sasuke cut Itachi up like an emo pinata. If it had been a Kage Bunshin variation made of crows (something that hasn't even been mentioned up to this point; seriously, Karasu Bunshin=WTF), then Team Hebi would've not only found feathers, but gruesome severed crow bodies as well.

If you'll recall, when the crow flew off Itachi's shoulder at the beginning of Sasuke's attack, it lost a bunch of feathers.

The only explanation is that it was Genjutsu. You don't NEED Mangekyou Sharingan; just a stronger normal Sharingan can overpower a weaker Sharingan.

This isn't the first time we see a clone made of a living creature. Does Shino's Bug Clone ring any bells to you? Itachi was just using a Crow Clone just to communicate with Sasuke. Itachi isn't dumb enough to waste his chakra for a genjutsu against Sasuke, who's good with genjutsu unlike Naruto.

The way Sasuke cut him up, I'd expect dimembered crow bodies everywhere. Everywhere. >_>

Hanzou must have been incredibly strong if he defeated the Sannin in their prime. I wonder he was strong enough to defeat the 3rd Hokage or Minato/4th Hokage.
