Cell couldn't even hit Gohan at first, and that was the same Cell that hit Goku. Gohan also wasn't impressed with Goku, or he didn't seem to be when he went to his maximum. If Gohan felt like that, he had to have been considerably more powerful then Goku.

Gohan didn't fight back because he was being a chump, but he could've fought back and did okay if he wanted to. None of Cell's attacks even hurt him.

You don't have to be stronger than someone AT ALL to follow their movements, say nothing about having to be "much stronger".

Unless Gohan totally owned Cell like Vegeta owned Cui, he isn't "much" stronger than Goku. Goku fought Cell evenly; he did NOT get dominated. And then against the same Cell, all Gohan managed to do was run away from him and dodge.

My full point in saying that is that Gohan pretty much admitted after that that it looked like they weren't even trying, and he thought they were still warming up or something. So not only was he on par with reading their every movement, but indications show he surpassed even Cell's current state since he said "neither of you were really trying for real yet, right?".
