I don't agree when people say that BD shows Vegeta's eviler side. It's simply through watching the Ocean dubs first and the Funi ones in the later series.
As for emotionless, whut? Did you even watch CS's half-arsed screaming in the Namek clip? |

Vegeta's Seiyuu... or Vegeta's Japanese voice actor.
I personally feel Drummond was good in that he captured a more brilliant, laid back (not necessarily indolent), but sinister and menacing quality in tone that Vegeta's character initially had - some people - even if eventually good or inherently good - can and might just treat the world like a game when they come upon the notion that there's a certain freedom about just doing that. Hence why Vegeta kills Nappa and decides to go against Freeza... that, and Vegeta's callous nature. Drummond captures all of that well, as does Ryo. But again, Sabat is just too strained for my tastes. His building, guttural yells and grunts come to mind - neither of which are good in quality. With a more natural tone, he works better (hence why when he voices other characters with more placid tones, generally, like Piccolo, new depths of tone can be heard, nigh in an impalpable way... at least, in my ears).

I got 10x the emotion from Sabats final explosion than any of the others.

YouTube - DBZ Goku vs Vegeta Ocean pt 2 Drummond owns Sabat in the scream department, no doubt.
Chris Sabat sounds awful in the remastered version, but, like everyone keeps saying, he's good later on, especially in the Cell saga. |

Why even remaster it then? They should just combine the best actors and do it that way. EG, Funi Roshi>>>>>>>>>>>Ocean Roshi so they use him. Actually, aside from early Vegeta I think Funi>Ocean in most of the voices I've heard. Its probably because I grew up with Funi.

I agree that Horikawa is the best Vegeta, though... he captures all the character's aspects (arrogant, mysterious, vicious, full of subtle malice), but he is also the ONLY ONE to make Vegeta actually sound like a prince. If it's English, it's gotta be redub Sabat for me or nothing.

Here's agreeance with Madness. It depends upon which you saw inaugurally, and though the voice acting can dramatically personify a character, what matters more or less is the character itself and less the voice on many accounts. The range and fountain of emotion that goes into the voice (and how it intertwines with the character) is critical - but there tends to be more tiffing over the voice actors than the character.

CS sounds absolutely ridiculous in the Saiyan Saga... and dammit, if Goku didn't sound so crap in the japanese one I'd watch it just for Vegeta. The JVA for Vegeta is indeed marvelous.

But in the talks of this, if anything miffs me about the dub VAs, though, it's that many of their emotional ranges are so monotonous and so cut up into "happy, sad, angry, or confused" that it comes off as black-and-white enough to be needlessly like or of a caricature. However, I'd hold fast to the direction being the issue rather than the VAs. Still, Sabat gives Vegeta a much too rough tone, while Drummond is much better in my ears, his voice can be a tad too raspy and high for me. Hence the resulting preference I have of Ryo - he had no issues warming to the role of Vegeta, and manages avoidance of all these erroneous issues while going leaps and bounds ahead in terms of characterization and accentuation just through voicing emotion alone (such as prideful tones, quiet dutifulness and determination, domination, subtleties, royalty, etc).

The japanese one wasn't ideal IMHO but it sorta gave me an idea of who would be the ideal voice actor for Vegeta, I think its that guy who voices Kazuya in Tekken, he seems like he would fit the bill. That's the kind of voice that I would picture Vegeta having.
As for Drummond vs Sabat well in the first stages of DBZ Drummond pwns Sabat, especially 'its over 9000' and 'you'll never escape my wrath' but in the Buu saga he just made me cringe. Sabat is average and Drummond tends to fluctuate but if we go for Drummond's high points I'd say him |
