Vegeta timid to fight Piccolo?

This situation comes from the commotion between Gohan and Vegeta at the end of the Freeza Saga, where everybody thinks Goku “died” on Namek. It all starts out with Vegeta laughing unsympathetically at everyone who is saying that they miss Goku. Then, Vegeta starts to declare that he is the strongest warrior in the universe and that no one can put a stop to him. Subsequently, Gohan starts to become very irritated and retorted to Vegeta that his dad is alive and that his dad will take care of Vegeta. Vegeta says that Goku is deceased. Afterwards, Gohan and Vegeta start combating.

Vegeta gains the upper hand in the fight for a while, until, Gohan landed some vicious strikes on Vegeta. Vegeta becomes irate and begins to beat the living hell out of Gohan until he is unconscious. He keeps on punching Gohan relentlessly in the air. Gohan falls to the ground. Vegeta pretty much was about to eradicate Gohan until Piccolo showed up. Piccolo stands in the way of Vegeta not letting him get another shot on Gohan. Vegeta laughs and runs off.

Now, why do you think Vegeta didn’t want to battle Piccolo?

Vegeta likely thought it over, and knew he overreacted. He was above Piccolo in power, so it couldn't have been because of that.

Another possibility would be that Vegeta didn't have the time to fight Piccolo. Externally, he maybe considered Piccolo would be a waste of his time(Vegeta probably knows inside that Piccolo would give him a run for his money).

Vegeta was about to get into it with Piccolo when Goku arrived back, too. It seems like Vegeta was always reluctant to go against him for some reason.

Yeah I remember watching this yesterday, I hated that part because I wanted Vegeta to finish off Gohan, Vegeta could have easily wiped Piccolo out, he had nothing better to do.

I always wondered how they get too distracted to finish their enemies off? Like Freeza against Nail; you would think Freeza would've zapped him after what Nail said.

I know, it just seems like Freeza would get pissed and zap, or attack anyone who says anything that would ruin his chances with gettin a wish. The way he just flew off was just funny to me.

Piccolo and Vegeta are two very odd beings really... they're both former enemies of Goku and they slowly became friends with him.

Anyway, on topic. Would want to fight Piccolo? Vegeta knows that Piccolo has tactical smarts, and he probably wouldn't want to face him. Besides, he probably didn't want to waste the time.

Gohan inflicted way too much damage on Vegeta for me to believe that, but this is an example of one of the few times Toei did a good job.

To be honest Piccolo and Vegeta have never really had an actual "Legitimate" fight.
