It wasn't. Any human with the same power level as goku got shot then it'd have pretty much the same effect.

Does it need to be? We've all seen what Goku was able to take whilst not being all that much stronger than a human. Maybe at the black belt level of speed. But as Zer0 said, he's much higher in general muscle power anyway.

To add, Goku's brute strength (basically, his physical prowess' output) isn't necessarily a reflection of his power. His bodily energy cannot always be guaged to accurately reflect that, especially considering the more fantastical origins of the Saiyans and how Toriyama-sensei did not apply the physics of the world we live in to the series. Chi attacks, for an example, are not necessarily an energy in all facets so much as they are sheer force (which is what causes the resulting environmental damage of their usage). And considering that Goku continues to add chi and gets immense augmentations in said power, that just goes to further the notion - Goku's strength is not all about physicality.

That aside, in the beginning of the series... well, calculating Dragonball power levels doesn't quite surmount to an option of sorts. I'd say he's roughly 3 or 4 times stronger than the average human, considering that he survives gunfire at point blank range, amongst other physical feats.
