Yeah, they definitely went straight to SSJ3 when they fused. I think Trunks even said they were going to go right into their Super Gotenks form when they fuse.

Yeah, I think the original question was more along the lines of "is Gotenks capable of SSj2," or "Does Gotenks ever go SSj2."

Bottom line is, if he's gone SSj3, he MUST have achieved SSj2 as well. The Super Saiyan stages are linear; you can't just skip ahead to one stage without having reached or mastered the previous one (If you asked me, that's what caused problems with SSj "1.5" -- It was trying to tap into SSj2 power before the body was ready for it). Gohan had to reach SSj1 before he could become an SSj2, and Goku had to reach SSj2 before he could attain SSj3.

Keep in mind I'm talking about FIRST ACHIEVING the stages, here. Obviously, once you've attained a stage, you can skip right to it if you want or need to. In the Buu saga, Goku's jumped straight from base to SSj2 and from base and SSj1 to SSj3 on various occasions, Vegeta jumped straight from base into SSj2 to fight Kid Buu, and of course, Gotenks went right from SSj1 to SSj3, and has even jumped straight into SSj3 AS he's being formed from the fusion. But they all had to reach those stages first.

I'd love to agree with you but I can't. There's no evidence that this is true past the order that they gained them in. Goku never mentions anything about mastering the SSJ2 form, or even needing to have it to ascend to SSJ3.

But there's no logical reason to assume that a person would ever just become a Super Saiyan 3 one day without having previously transformed into a Super Saiyan 2.

There's no canonical reason that they wouldn't. Not by the way that Goku describes it (if that bit is filler my argument is fuuuucked...).

Like I said, I think it's filler. When he shows Goten and Trunks SSJ3 he gives a detailed explanation on how to achieve it.

You say you can't skip a power level.. well umn I know he uses a machine and all but Vegeta skips SSJ 3 If I'm correct and goes straight to SSJ 4. XD Just thought i'd say..

Correct, that is filler. The only time that Goten and Trunks witness Goku going SSj3 is when he transforms against Fat Boo.

Gotenks probably had the ability to use SSj3 when he was originally fused, therefore skipping SSj2 without ever actually using it or even experiencing it most likely wouldn't even be an issue for him. Usually its people that aren't strong enough to use SSj3 that use SSj2, or at least display the ability to use it. Goku only used 2 the first time because he didn't want to damage Vegeta's pride, and the second time that he used it was only to show Boo that there was a second form of SSj.

So Gotenks probably never used it or even experienced it because he felt that he didn't need to, because of the fact that he had access to a higher form.

IDK if SS2 was shown, but if he can do SS3 he can do SS2, whether he did it in the manga or not.

Which isn't nessecarily true, as we don't know if SSJ2 is needed to go SSJ3. We can assume so, but why wasn't it used?
