But no, he was only mentioned a couple of times, and nothing was said about his combat power at all. I remember Raditz saying that Goku looked exactly like their father, and Freeza saying that Goku looked just like "that Saiyan that resisted until the very end, when I destroyed Planet Vegeta...!"

(The narrator then said that "that Saiyan" was Burdock, Goku's father.)

Yep.

Chibi is right. I read that manga page three times and came to the conclusion that Bardock or Burdock owns.

(Captain Falcon's punch owned the fucking universe it had to have been higher.)

Yep, and even the break in the armor is in the same place. And the Burdock TV special aired in October of 1990, while the manga chapter that Burdock appeared in (#307) was first published in Weekly Shônen Jump #5, year 1991 (I think that would have come out in February 1991 or so). So Toriyama definitely used the TV special for reference, and not the other way around.

Canonically, there is no stated power level for Burdock - all we can garner is that he is of a low-class tier. I know Chuckles already clarified this, but just saying.

As for whether the movie has any bearings on the canon story, I would say only what Toriyama-sensei made the inclusion of - they may look rather strikingly similar, but that doesn't mean that the content of the movie is everything Toriyama-sensei had in mind. Otherwise, it's just basing things on assumption when we only have hints of what was alluded to in the Manga. It's not a long stride from saying that Person A is there so Person A's sibling, Person B, must be there as well. It doesn't quite work as such, if I may be so stringent.

But Toriyama himself said in Daizenshuu 6: MOVIES & TV SPECIALS "It's a pretty dramatic story that I'd never draw myself. I got to see a different kind of DragonBall in a good way." To me, this seems like he's saying that he didn't really have anything in mind for the character of Burdock or his backstory ("It's a pretty dramatic story that I'd never draw myself"), but since he liked the special so much that he felt like incorporating him into the manga ("I got to see a different kind of DragonBall in a good way").

I mean, it's a fact that Burdock wasn't designed by Toriyama (Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru created him and his crew, with Toriyama updating their designs), nor did he create his backstory, yet Toriyama later added Burdock into two manga panels, looking just like he did during his fight with Freeza in the TV special.

Do you really want to believe that Toriyama copied that portion of the TV special and decided that the rest of it didn't happen?
