Question about 17 vs. Piccolo and 16 vs. Cell...

I don't have volume 31, and I've only read this one as a scanlation. Can I ask, were both fights stated to be perfectly even? In my scanlation Piccolo vs. 17 is "pretty even" and 16 & Cell are "about" equal, but what does it say in the VIz or original Japanese? Thanks.

I thought Piccolo was slightly ahead, but #17 didn't tire and so took the advantage. Thats what my scanlation and the anime said, and what seemed to be implied.

Also, from the images only(screw innacurate fanslation), it seemed #16 was slightly ahead of Cell

Yes, I've translated these pretty literally. #18's comment contains no "about," but the term #16 uses (in Japanese), "bobo," means "about," "roughly," "approximately," etc. So, yes, he does say that their powers are about equal.

Why put 16 a little behind cell? they were equal, if anything 16 got more hits in than cell did.

IMO 16 seemed a little ahead, but i think you should class them as even.

They seemed even until Cell powered up. Then Cell kicks #16's ass until #16 does the rocket punch thingy, followed by the "Hell's Flash" attack. So I would place Cell's full power above #16's (#16 only surprised Cell with the Hell's Flash, after all).
