He's based off Jiang Shi (chinese vampire), I think.

Chaozu is a human.

His design is most likely influenced by chinese opera.

As the short side kick of the hero often has pail white mask or make up with red rosey cheaks.

In dragonball he said he obtained it through extreme meditation.

Also yes they are anime characters. Perhaps to much in look into there orgins would be overdone, but still informative , educartional, and perhaps fun.

There are conflicting facts about Tien. In some versions his extra eye comes from him being enlightened (as in the Buddhist's belief in the "Third Eye"). In other versions, Tien is a distant descendant of an alien race.

The OOU answer however is that he was based off the three-eyed-demon who appears in The Journey to the West.

Chioatzu on the other hand was stated to be a Chinese vampire, or at least based off that idea. Also the fact of him being an emperor as far as I know is non-canon.

Well they aren't. In DBZ, there were many species that evolved into a more intelligent species
