I have just finished reading Volume 17. And I notice that Piccolo calls 'special beam cannon' 'Light of death'

Which name should I go by?

Well, the manga's considered the canon on this forum, so for total authenticity you'd want to call it either Light of Death or Makankosappo, and I believe Light of Death is a much closer translation (since I think Makankosappo means Demonic Penetrating Light Beam or something like that). But I doubt anyone would care too much if you called it Special Beam Cannon.

As far as I know, the translated VIZ manga should have exactly the same power levels as the original manga. I don't have the earlier manga where power levels were stated, but that's what I recall.

If its Viz slated(you read it from right to left) then they are 100% accurate. If its fan slated there is a possibility for mistake.

I think that stated power levels in manga are in topic "Stated power levels" by LegendarySSJ7.

The VIZ translation is not always 100% accurate. As a reader of the Japanese manga, I can attest to that. But it's good enough for what it is. Hell, that's what I grew up on.

The only incorrect power level I can think of is Vegeta's when he fights Reacoom (it's 20,000 instead of 30,000), but that's because the original Japanese tankôbon said that as well. He was listed at 30,000 in the Daizenshuu, and the corresponding line in the anime was changed to 30,000 as well, so it's widely considered to be a mistake on Toriyama's part.

As for the Makanôsappô, or the "Light of Death," that's a fairly good translation as far as I'm concerned. The literal translation is just too awkward in English.
魔 (ma) means "demon," or "demonic." It can also mean "magic" in some contexts.
貫 (kan) to pierce, to penetrate
光 (kô) light
殺 (satsu) to kill
砲 (hô) gun, cannon

Together, they form Captain Planet the Makankôsappô, or the "Demonic Piercing Light Death Cannon."

Call it whatever you like, as long as we understand what you're talking about. Personally I call it Makankosappo but Light of Death is also good. It's like Garlic Gun, Gallic Gun or Gariku'Hô(Or something like that). As long as we understand each others names don't matter.
