Yeah, I've always wondered about that. It seems like a plot hole, doesn't it? But maybe his Saiyan cells and Namekian cells made some weird combination that allowed it to work out. Or maybe regenerating major body parts counts as healing from a near death experience, making the energy lost regenerating them seem inconsequential.

Or maybe Toriyama just didn't think it through?

Well Cell lost energy from regenerating from Goku's Kamehameha, so it must be a plothole.

That's very possible. His previous regeneration was after Gohan's Kame beam, but he was still intact for the most part. After he exploded, he was able to completely rebuild himself into his perfect form with no problem; so him regenerating from nothin seems like a reasonable explanation as to why he would receive a power-up like that.

Your AT point is also very possible as well.

Actually AT point is the best one. I done see AT thinking a lot about that. Cell needed Zenkai, so he got one. The condition for Zenkai to escape near death is fulfilled and the plot desperately needed it, so he got one.

Yeah I think that's a fair point. Zenkai's are plot advancers after all.
