I can't scan anything, but I'm sure the online ones even have that. He states this to Gohan, and of course, he didn't use the word "zenkai" when he talked about it.

It's never stated that the most drastic experiences bring more power. If that were the case, Goku should've never been close to Vegeta's power when healed, since Vegeta's was much worse.

But in this case, I think it makes sense. It's the ultimate near-death experience, being reduced to a single cell.
