Thinking about it, Goku doesn't actually abandon his family all that much. He was a good father and husband post-DB, pre-DBZ and he isn't actually all that bad. The only time he really makes steps to leave his family without a good reason is when he goes to train Uub, and even then he'd had a good 10 years or so with them.
