Yea but what I don't understand is why Toriyama changed the feel of Dragon Ball. The story was an action packed adventure filled with fighting before the Cell saga, then it started to go down hill. For the Cell and Buu sagas, it literally became exclusively a fighting series, there was no adventure to it.

@DKP: I didn't mind that actually. It was still really fun to read. While you hate the Cell Arc, what made it my favorite part of the series was the theme of succession that slowly began to reveal itself until the very end with Gohan's beam struggle.

Yea and I bet he was tired of it going on, so maybe he tried to make it that way so nobody would wanna continue the story after he was done...

Perhaps. But to me, it just wasn't as fun to read or watch as the earlier series.

It wasn't that bad, the only good idea in my opinion that came out of the Cell saga was indeed, as you stated, the theme of succession. I liked the fact that Toriyama wanted to retire Goku, he'd been planning it for a while before the Cell arc.

Even though the story was super saiyan was the highest power up and the user would be the strongest in the universe or what not. The enemies had to keep gaining power to keep the show interesting. It would kind of get dull and boring to watch Goku head into battle, turn into super saiyan and dispose of his opponent in a matter of a few minutes. So they threw in the idea and possiblity of a SSJ being trashed on the battle field and having to realize that they are not the warrior of legend. Summoning up the power of SSJ2 and more. Or at least thats what I think.

I agree. The Saiyan/Freeza arc's were among the best; then you have many of the Dragon Ball arc's being good as well. I liked the Cell/Buu parts of the story, but I agree that it began to lose that certain feeling. It began to be nothing but a who's stronger then who story, somewhat. I still enjoyed them, though.

And even though I'm not a fan of the movies, the first 3 DBZ movies weren't that bad. The fights in them were longer, and each character actually lasted more then two hits as opposed to the later movies (Vegeta was hit by Broly once in 8 and he was totally out). The first 3 Dragon Ball Z movies had somewhat of a "kung fu" flick feel to them. Afterward, the movies simply became a power display between characters.

I also agree with that. The first three were nothing but "pure fighting", without the use of so many techniques. After that, transformations and other things ruined the movies. The Z-warriors would get their asses kicked for 40 minutes of the movie, then, Goku or Gohan would somehow get real strong, and go on to win against whoever they were fighting within the last couple minutes of that movie. That started to get old pretty quick.

I agree with the past 6 posts, I think the 3 best arc's were the saiyan, frieza, and cell saga.

They were the best, those were the 3 most interesting saga's. I also sgree with the first 3 movies, they were the best.

I've been reading the original Dragon Ball and yes, Z did lose its way a bit in terms of adventure. Really they should have let it stop after Freeza.

And really I lost a bit of respect for Toriyama for bringing in the extra transformations. There were so many ways he could've done it, and he didn't. He could've made Super Saiyan some thing that couldn't be accessed all the time, or simply had Goku die on Namek. Than we could have had Sagas with Gohan as the main character, fulfilling the underlying motto of Dragon Ball (kids can do things just as well as adults).

Yea well, the fans wanted kakarrot as the main hero...Thats what the japanese wanted and there would have been less readers if kakarrot was dropped.

And that's the whole reason Goku didn't stay dead after the Cell Arc. Toriyama wanted to kill him off but the fans wouldn't let him.
