That is correct. At the time, Goku was intended to be the Legendary Super Saiyan, but the transformation's once-in-a-millenium status gets deflated pretty quickly as the series goes on.

Yea by the time of the Buu saga, it was enough there were 4 super saiyans, but then we see a total of 6...that was just too much.

I read something once that said that Son Goku was the Legendary Super Saiyan that would usher in a new age of Super Saiyans.

I think they were cheesy because of the art work not being so good, then it looked even worse in the anime from the shitty animation.

I actually thought that the idea of ascending the Super Saiyan was pretty kickass. I knew by the time of the Android Arc that SSj wasn't legendary anymore, and watching characters do the impossible was fun for me. Gohan "realizing" his hidden potential by truely going above and beyond the first level felt very good to watch.

Well, Kaio states that Goku is the legendary super saiyajin. When Namek blows up, and everyone is happy about his victory, Kaio says "It [meaning SSJ] would appear to be a fleeting title,"--Volume 12 I believe.

So...Goku holds the "title". And for 60-75% of the series he is "the strongest" so...

Yea, but achieveing power beyond what was considered infinite power? Also the continuing onslaught of ascended forms was simply a cycle that repeated itself. It wasn't a new idea, it was just a recycled one. The Cell saga was nothing more then a hoard of recycled stuff, even the villian himself was simply a composite of the iconic Dragon Ball characters. The Buu saga was more original in terms of inginuity, but the fusion thing was dumb, and the fact that Goten and Trunks were Super Saiyans without explanation.

Yes he is, but he shouldn't have went on...It should have been gohan then gohan and vegeta the hero in the rest of the series.

Gohan with cell. Then gohan and vegeta with buu.

I meant from my perspective as the reader.

ANB, Kaio-Sama "stating" that Goku is the Super Saiyan of legend doesn't mean it's true. It might just mean that he thinks Goku is.

The concept of Super Saiyan 3 was fun to watch for me. I liked seeing the transformations throughout the anime, it kinda gave everyone hope that their favorite fighter would gain a stronger transformation and defeat the newer stronger foe. It would be some what boring if Goku were the strongest no matter what and he could beat everyone in the universe. Being a Vegeta fan and not really liking Goku all that much, it made the serise alot more fun and exciting to watch.

Manga wise, it did kinda get stupid and out of hand to read about all that extra power ups and such just because they did not give the dramatic effect the anime did. I loved DBZ manga and anime. All time great for me.

By the way, very nice essay. I enjoyed reading it.

Every one of the transformations is necessary. When each villain is stronger than the last, the heores have to get stronger, too.

Either that, or just keep having Frieza-level villains over and over. Where's the "threat" to that? It would be boring as hell.

Yea but then you have Vegetto who owned Gohan Buu with regular Super Saiyan. Why can't the Super Saiyan just defeat all his opponents with Super Saiyan, why does there need to be additional forms?

So very true, but I think the anime brought something the manga didn't bring, and I don't mean the filler scenes either...

I mean the dramatic transformations, the build up to them, yea you can read them in the manga, but the anime gives the real feeling of the build up.
