After traveling through time to give Goku his medication, the fight with Cell and the Androids, and encountering everyone of the past; you'd think his world would change once he returned to 'the future', now that everyone in the past has battled and defeated Cell and the Androids.
The reason I am confused is, why has nothing changed in Mirai Trunks' time? Everyone is still gone, the Dragonballs are still non-existent, Cell is still alive (well, not for long) along with the Androids, and the world is still in ruins... Am I the only one confused by this? |

No Trunks clearly states that whatever he did now (in Goku's time) would not change anything in his own time. Trunks just wanted to make a difference; he felt it was the right thing to do to save one timeline, even though sadly it would not change his own. This is what is known as time paradox or inconsistency, and how the dimensions of time inside the world of Dragonball Z work.

Yeah. In the DBZ universe time overcomes paradoxes by 'splitting' when history is changed. This creates 2 divergent timelines (4, by the time the Cell Saga is over). One where Trunks is killed by Cell, one where Trunks kills Cell, a past where Trunks shows up but Cell doesn't, and the timeline we saw in the series.

I'm pretty sure there were only three timelines.
1) Trunks' time, where Gohan dies. In this timeline, Trunks kills the Androids with a remote and as he is going to go back in time, Cell shows up and kills him. Since Trunks never trained, he dies easily. 2) Trunk's time, where he kills Cell. This is the timeline of the surviving Trunks. He goes back, kills the androids, and when Cell shows up, he kills Cell. 3) The canon timeline. This is the timeline that is created from Trunks' coming into the past. Goten is born here.

In your first timeline Trunks has a remote, but where did he get it from? If he made it in his own timeline and took out the Androids with it then why was he going into the past? Trunks had to have already gone into the past twice before (once to warn Goku of the Androids and again to help them out). In this past he never encountered Cell, shown from Cell's flash back to when Trunks didn't know who/what he was. It is then mandatory that we have four timelines. Two pasts and two futures. A past created by the Trunks who was killed by Cell in which Cell does not appear (at least, not a timetraveling one) (This is the "Unseen Timeline") and a past where he does ("Series Timeline"). Then there's the future where the Trunks who didn't know about Cell is killed ("Original/History of Trunks Timeline") and the future where the Trunks who does know about Cell kills him ("Alternate Future Timeline"). |

I don't think I quite understand lol.
Alright, let me see. There's the timeline where Cell shows up and kills Trunks who doesn't know about Cell. Then there's the timeline where Trunks kills Cell. There's the timeline where he.. oh I got it! The timeline where Cell never exists because they killed Cell when Cell was an egg or something and the timeline where Cell was not created, which was kind of History or Trunks, right? Trunks was like 17 when he went into the past and in that time, Cell had not shown up yet. The Androids must have been around since before he was born, when Mirai Gohan was just a kid. Ok, I get it now.

I'll try and break it down individually to help clarify a few things.
Original Timeline/History of Trunks: Self explanatory, really. Everything that occured in HoT. However, this is also the timeline that Cell came from, thus the timeline in which Trunks is killed and the Z Fighters are no more. Unseen Timeline: This is the timeline Trunks created originally, where Cell didn't show up. (He could still appear in the future, since he wasn't killed as an embryo, but he didn't come back in time here.) Series Timeline: This is what we saw in the series with Cell showing up and the Cell Games and stuff. Alternate Future: This is the timeline where Trunks, who knows about Cell from having met him in the Series Timeline, kills Cell as seen at the end of the Cell Saga. |
