I see no solid proof that Vegeta was SS2 before he was possessed by Babidi. There is a light implication that maybe he did but odds are he wasn't refering to himself but rather Gohan.

Anyway, SS Vegeta was way stronger then SS Gohan, he would have Pwn'd Dabura.

He also said something when Bulma was talking about how if Gohan enter he would be sure to win Vegeta said, "Don't be so sure, I've been training for the last 7 years..."

If he was referring to Gohan then Vegeta would be outraged that Goku surpassed him EVEN more then before.

Vegeta refers to himself as ascending...

Also Goku says Dabura>>Cell and Vegeta says that he could have defeated him by now since Gohan got very weak.

if Vegeta had fought Dabura:

Dabura would've been dead --> babidi dead --> no majin buu --> goku still dead (good thing XD) --> vegeta still alive --> no gotenks --> gohan is still weak without special training ---> end of adventure and the earlier they could ruin the ending of DBZ
