Weird....

This has been mentioned many a time, but not clarified properly.
In the Buu saga, when Dabura and Babidee select the people they want to drain energy from, they point out Son Goku, Son Gohan, and Vegeta. There is no indication that they knew about the Super Saiyan transformation, nor that they could sense "suppressed" power--I'd say, the opposite is shown, since they needed a machine to count Super Saiya-jinn Son Goku's power level. So, this practically means, in my eyes, that Piccolo << base Gohan.
Stated that: base Gohan (Buu arc) < base Gohan (Cell arc)
It is also shown during the fight with the Cell Jrs that, Piccolo wasn't that far behind ASSj Vegeta/Trunks in power. Behind still, but not that far.
Assuming that Piccolo's power didn't wane throughout the period between the two sagas, not significantly at least, otherwise it would have been mentioned I suppose, we have
base Gohan (Buu arc) > Piccolo
base Gohan (Buu arc) < base Gohan (Cell arc)
Piccolo <= ASSj Vegeta (Cell arc)
So that means, base Gohan (Cell arc) > ASSj Vegeta (Cell arc).
Doesn't that sound weird?

Moved to the Dragonball / Z forum, as it doesn't quite fall in place with the facets of The Versus Forum complex face of the less-jagged wall one would usually glance across.

But if by 'ASSj Vegeta (Cell arc)', you insinuate SSj Type 2 Vegeta (post-1st RoSaT)? Then it's really not a stupefying thing in my view. There has been many a case where such inane, contorted, and caricatural leaps in power have reached fruition where other combatants surpass one to the other by quite some lengths in the Dragonball universe; pre-RoSaT SSj Vegeta already surpassed SSj Goku on Namek by quite a length as things were by one (over a 2x difference by my estimation... said 'over a' portion of that sentence immensely noticeable, again, by my estimation).
By the Boo Saga Arc; remember that the SSj multiplier had ebbed to around 5x (though that's a debatable, 5x is mine and many other's interpretations). MSSj Goku was so far above SSj 3 Type Mirai Trunks (post 1st-RoSaT) even not at full power that it wasn't even funny to gaze across. SSj 3 Type Mirai Trunks surpassed the most suppressed version seen of Complete Cell by enough of a length that it left Piccolo taken back and in intense darkness as to how Trunks was anyplace near such power. It was a 7-year gap and that's more than enough room for the Zet Senshi to receive more than just marginal growth at best.

Remember that they are suppressed to such a low powerlevel that the villain’s think that Pui-Pui is able to wining from them.Piccolo enters in a tournament of which he thinks he can win and it wouldn’t make sense if he can’t even win of a base Saiya-jin. And I think that Dabura could see in someway some of the power they where hiding.
